Beau Zastrow takes another swing

Local golfer shooting for berth in Pebble Beach pro-am event

After failing to qualify for the Wal-Mart First Tee Open the last two years, Zastrow recently learned that he has once again been accepted to play in the tournament's qualifier this July in Manhattan, Kan.

And Zastrow is confident that his perseverance will pay off the third time around and he'll finally fulfill his goal of playing in the pro-am event at Pebble Beach.

"One of the nine core values of First Tee is perseverance," Zastrow said about the program of which he is a member.

First Tee aims to introduce youngsters to golf who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity, providing free equipment and lessons. Mentors such as Zastrow, an incoming senior at St. Mary's High who's been on three league championship teams, serve as mentors on golf and life.

Only 80 golfers out of more than 100,000 First Tee members in chapters across the country were invited to play in the First Tee qualifier, which will be held July 16-19 at Kansas State University's Colbert Hills Golf Course.

Of the 80 chosen, only 40 will advance to the Pebble Beach pro-am on Labor Day weekend, where they will be paired with professional players from the Champions Tour.

However, there's more to qualifying than just two rounds of golf.

Players are required to write an essay about an obstacle they've overcome during their life and must also submit a list of community projects in which they've been involved.

A point system that takes into account all aspects of the qualifying process, including golf scores, will be used to determine which 40 golfers will advance to Pebble Beach.

"I keep trying and keep improving on what they would like me to improve on," Zastrow said. "I feel like my experience is beneficial. I've improved on everything and should get into the Open this time around."

Or as Zastrow tells the youngsters he mentors, perseverance pays off.
