The El Dorado Hills attorney is confident that District 10 — which has a traditional Republican tilt — has shifted in voter sentiment so that a Democrat can prevail in the November election. The district includes Lodi, parts of Sacramento County and Amador and El Dorado counties
Before speaking about her victory, Huber first praised her opponent.
"I'm really happy but I have to thank Jim Cook for a nice campaign," she said.
"We had a very different primary campaign than what happened on the Republican side," Huber said of the other party's election that degenerated into attack mailers between the three candidates in the final weeks.
Huber said her number one issue is education. She said the state's schools "are just falling apart" and not only need more money but a stable source of funding as well.
Cook, 59, a parole agent and Elk Grove resident, had run for the office in the 2006 election and ran as a write-in in 2004. During the campaign, he said he feared his party felt he wasn't progressive enough. Many of the endorsements he received in 2006 went to his opponent.
"She's a very good candidate and a very good opponent," he said.
Cook said he's looking forward to helping to bring about a Democratic victory in the fall.
"I look forward to uniting with and supporting her," he said of Huber.
In addition to securing more endorsements, Huber, 36, also raised more money than Cook in the campaign.
Huber lived in Lodi for much of her life, attending Lodi High School and San Joaquin Delta College. As an attorney, she specializes in business litigation and property law for the San Francisco law firm Bartko Zankel.
She is married and has two sons and two stepsons.
"I'm looking forward to continuing this fight onto in November," she said.
