Tokay's Kailey Toscano to play two sports at next level

Tokay High senior Kailey Toscano found herself in a dream scenario Friday afternoon.

Surrounded by friends, family and a former coach at Tokay High, she inked a letter of intent to join the Friends University volleyball and softball programs.

"It's a dream come true to be able to play volleyball and get into the major I want," Toscano said. "It was a bit overwhelming in the beginning, but now I'm ready to graduate and show my stuff. It's really exciting."

The reigning Tri-City Athletic League Defensive Player of the Year in volleyball led the Tigers to a 16-15 record last season before falling in the first round of the section playoffs to Nevada Union.

She originally whittled her college list down to the only three four-year schools in the nation that have Zoo Science programs, but bypassed the Falcons.

That all that changed at the Colorado Crossroads Junior National Qualifier.

"The coach was at the Denver tournament looking at some other people," Toscano said. "I approached him and talked with him about their zoo program initially. He asked what position I played and when I told him, he said he was looking for a libero. He came and watched me play and he was interested. I guess he liked what he saw."

Now she gets the best of both worlds.

"I knew what I wanted to do, so I looked for schools with that major and that was one of them," Toscano said. "I'm kind of lucky with that. Once they offered something, it was an easy decision."

Friends is a Christian-based, liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,900 in Wichita, Kansas. The Falcons compete in the NAIA and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and finished 12-19 last season in volleyball.

"She was an asset on our team this year, she was the defensive player of the year," Tokay volleyball coach Pam Buzo said. "She wanted to play at the next level and there's a school for everybody. I think this is the perfect fit for Kailey."

The Falcons' softball squad just finished its season with a 34-12 record after winning the KCAC regular season, the KCAC Postseason Tournament and the NAIA Region IV tournament before being eliminated in the NAIA National Tournament. The Falcons had a school record 32-game winning streak at one point, just one win shy of the national mark.

Toscano hasn't played softball since her sophomore year on the junior varsity squad, but she decided to get back out on the diamond when asked.

"I didn't play softball at the varsity level, but I always missed it," Toscano said. "When they offered me a shot to play two sports, I was a little hesitant at first, but the coach was willing to take me on and I was really happy."

Tokay's last day of school is June 12th and that will give Toscano a little more than two months to enjoy California before packing up and moving halfway across the country.

"I have to be settled in the dorms by August 18 and school starts on August 21," Toscano said. "They have a JV and varsity level there, but I will definitely compete for varsity right away. I think I have the talent that can compete with them. I might not be a starter right off the bat, but as long as I'm traveling I'll be happy."
