New Anglican church headed by Bishop John-David Schofield to be formed in Lodi

A new Anglican church headed by conservative Bishop John-David Schofield will soon be formed in Lodi.

The church will be affiliated with former Episcopal churches in the San Joaquin Diocese that left the American Episcopal Church and joined up with the more conservative Southern Cone based in Argentina. Episcopal Church USA serves under the Anglican Church, based in England.

Schofield has appointed Deacon Roger Riggsby as priest of the new Lodi church, to be called St. Anselm of Canterbury Anglican Church. Riggsby doesn't know when the church will start up because he hasn't found a location to worship. He said he has talked to pastors at a few churches who said they are willing to let St. Anselm of Canterbury use their buildings.

An organizational meeting is scheduled for June 8 in Manteca.

The San Joaquin Diocese, which covers Lodi to Bakersfield and east to Mammoth Lakes and Ridgecrest, split this year over what Schofield perceives as a growing liberalization of the national Episcopal Church. Schofield strongly opposed the consecration of V. Eugene Robinson, an openly gay man, as bishop of New Hampshire. Schofield maintains that Robinson's appointment violates scripture.

That means there are two San Joaquin Dioceses, one that is Episcopal and one that is Anglican under the Southern Cone. The Episcopal San Joaquin Diocese reorganized on March 29 in Lodi and appointed Jerry Lamb as the new bishop.

The new Lodi congregation will be a "mission church" sponsored by St. Mary's Anglican Church in Manteca. Riggsby said he has served at St. Mary's and an Episcopal church in Copperopolis.

Riggsby said he has no intention of attracting conservatives away from St. John's Episcopal Church.

"We're not anti-Episcopal," he said. "I'd like to work with them. I'm not going to lay my beliefs like a sledgehammer."

Claire Lima, a St. John's parishioner who has a conservative interpretation of the Bible, said she heard a rumor about an Anglican church in Lodi at a pastor search committee meeting Wednesday night at St. John's.

"It's a good thing," Lima said when hearing the news about St. Anselm coming to Lodi. "I think there's room for everyone in Lodi. I'm surprised that it's happening very quickly."

Andee Zetterbaum, who actively supports keeping St. John's in the American Episcopal Church, was taken by surprise when she heard the news on Thursday.

"We share a common tradition, and it's sad they feel they can't be a part of the Episcopal Church, which is a branch of the Anglican Communion in the United States," Zetterbaum said.

" Captn, Celibate gay priests have really been successful in the Catholic Church haven't they? What a joke! "

" One of the things Jesus said when being nailed to the cross was "forgive them Father, they know not what they do..." and yes, He could very well have been alluding to you militant gay activists. "

My point was that each Diocese is currently a part of the Anglican Communion. The article in my opinion makes TEC out to be in the right and not the party that is out of touch with the majority of the Anglican Communion. Bishop Schofield is a Godly man and is trying to follow the teaching of the Bible.

On your second comment, a homosexual that is celibate is not sinning. God's rule is to be celibate or married and faithful. Marriage is between one man and one woman. "

Spoken like a true Christian!

Those are the exact words spoken by Jesus as they pounded in the last nail, right? "

" Captn, what the hell does all that mean?
As a member of the St Johns congregation, I have no idea what you're talking about, nor do I care. This whole thing makes me sick. Either you agree with homosexual and lesbian priests or you don't. If you don't want a gay priest, don't hire one. Seems pretty simple to me. Who cares what Scofield thinks. If you hire a gay priest at St Johns, I'm out of there! "

" I would like to clarify the following from the article. "The church will be affiliated with former Episcopal churches in the San Joaquin Diocese that left the American Episcopal Church and joined up with the more conservative Southern Cone based in Argentina. Episcopal Church USA serves under the Anglican Church, based in England."

The Souther Cone also is a member of the Anglican communion.

San Joaquin Diocese is a part of the Soithern Come which is a member of the Anglican Communion.

The Episcopal San Joaquin is a part of The Episcopal Church (TEC) which is a member of the Anglican Communion

The Episcopal Church is in impaired communion with a number of the other member groups. "
