Lodi's Carter hurdles into state championships
Accomplishment: Lodi High junior Kayla Carter qualified for the CIF State Track and Field Championships in the girls 100-meter hurdles last Friday.

Her time of 14.58 seconds at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet was good for second in the finals heat. Carter also advanced to the finals in the 300 hurdles, but did not qualify for the state meet in the event.
Carter, along with Lodi high jumpers Ray Nikzat and Samantha Balentine, will compete in the state meet on Friday in Cerritos.
Family: Albert and Nadine Carter, parents; one brother.
Favorite sport: Track.
"I like that it's a team sport, but it's also individual," said Carter, who also played basketball until this season. "It's a very laid-back experience."
Favorite athlete: Billy Mills, an Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000-meter run at the 1964 Tokyo games. "I met him and he was very inspiring," Carter said.
Favorite class: Math. "I like solving problems," she said. "And I like when there's only one answer to things."
Favorite hobbies: Carter enjoys working out, playing sports and hanging out with family and friends.
Would like to meet: Oprah. "She's a very good person and has done a lot of great things for the world," Carter said.
Crowning achievement: Qualifying for the state meet.
Plans: Carter hopes to run track for a UC school and eventually attend law school.
