Police looking for auto theft suspect
Lodi police recovered a purple Mercury Cougar on Sunday that was stolen in Galt on April 23, police said.
Sgt. Chris Jacobson said he was parked on routine patrol in the parking lot at El Rancho Motel, 603 N. Cherokee Lane, when he saw the Cougar pull into the parking lot at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Knowing that a purple Mercury Cougar was stolen, Jacobson said he wanted to check out the one that had just arrived. The driver walked into a motel room, then climbed out the back window, jumped a fence and ran through some apartments, Jacobson said.
While waiting for other officers to arrive, Jacobson said he discovered that the car was stolen, but the license plates were of another purple Cougar that wasn't stolen. As it turned out, the license plates were registered to someone in Galt.
Although the driver got away, officers found that he left his wallet with his driver's license in the car, Jacobson said. It turns out that the driver is on parole for auto theft, police said.
The car owner got the vehicle back in good condition, but the radio was stolen, Jacobson said.
Galt classroom catches fire
The corner of a portable classroom on the east side of Fairsite Elementary School was damaged by a fire Sunday night, according to the Cosumnes Community Services District.
The school is located on Caroline Avenue between Chabolla Avenue and Lincoln Way.
Fire investigators think the fire, which began at about 8 p.m., may have been caused by a smoldering cigarette outside the building, Battalion Chief John Michelini said.
Firefighters from Cosumnes and Woodbridge had to tear out a small portion of the plywood floor in the corner of Room 22, but it appeared that no schoolwork was damaged. The classroom could be occupied again within a couple of days, Michelini said.
