Cost of Lockeford's new park

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 7:50 AM PDT

Too bad your reporter didn't get his facts straight and report the full story relating to the Lockeford Community Services District agreeing to a $17,000 architectural contract for the design of a new park.

He cited $17 million as the cost for the new park or maybe your reporter was referring to the cost of the contract and it was just a misprint.

Well, that misprint is creating some unnecessary and false conclusions by Lockeford residents who are now wondering just what their elected officials are doing. Too bad he didn't report the rest of my statement relating to my concerns with spending $17,000 for the contract. What he didn't report was that I supported spending the money to gain the information needed for Lockeford residents to decide whether they want a park. It's too bad that this type of reporting makes it difficult for those of us who volunteer for public service to do our job.

Mike Henry, president, Board of Directors
Lockeford Community Services District

Note from editor Rich Hanner: Mr. Henry has a valid point. Following is the correction we published Monday:

The Lockeford Community Services District board awarded a $17,000 contract on Thursday to Callander Associates to draw a conceptual plan for a park in Lockeford. A story Friday gave an incorrect contract price.

" russemartin - 'Devastating'; suffered'? Isn't that a tad exaggerated? Errors don't occur only in the News-Sentinel; all newspapers commit mistakes. Such is the life of the 'daily.'

Was there any indication of intention or malice? Other than a correction, which the News-Sentinel provided, what else would Mr. Henry expect? "

" I do not believe that Mr. Henry was too harsh on criticizing The Lodi News Sentinel. This occurs too often with LNS staff writers. It was a devastating mistake suffered by Mr. Henry. Come on staff writers, let's have some discipline here. "

" Too bad Mr. Henry couldn't have just requested a correction be published. Too bad Mr. Henry, accepting that the error was a 'misprint,' felt the need to harshly criticize the Lodi News-Sentinel for what was obviously an unintentional 'mistake.' Certainly intentional and misleading reports are published and must be directly and openly examined and rectified; too bad this wasn't one of those cases that would warrant such a harsh reproach from Mr. Henry.
