Galt school praised for its character
Marengo Ranch Elementary School in Galt has been named California's school of character by the Character Education Partnership.
The Character Education Partnership is a Washington D.C.-based non-profit that focuses on promoting character education at kindergarten-through-12th-grade schools.
According to CEP's Web site, character education is instilling values in children by working them into all areas of school, whether that be riding the bus, sitting down to eat or learning social studies.
Marengo Ranch Elementary has also been selected as one of 25 finalists for the National School of Character award.
If Marengo Ranch Elementary is one of the 10 schools from around the country to win the award, it will receive a $20,000 grant — half of which can be spent at the school and the other half to promote character education at another school.
"That's exactly what we want, to spread character education," said Terry Metzger, principal at Marengo Ranch Elementary.
Last week at Marengo Ranch Elementary teachers taught students to be safe and responsible by giving them skills to stand up to a bully, refrain from bullying and step in when somebody else is being bullied.
Metzger said the school's success has its roots in a strong community of active parents, educators and students.
"Everybody has the same goal in mind," she said.
