STOCKTON — Winning pitcher Matt Clark and designated hitter Eric Hoover combined for five hits and six RBIs as Lodi thumped East Union 8-5 on Wednesday in the Lodi/Tokay Easter Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark on the Stockton Ports' home field.

Clark was a home run shy of the cycle, driving in three runs on the day. Hoover doubled in a run in the third and drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth before hammering a solo home run over the left-center field wall at the 385-foot mark in the bottom of the sixth.

Patrick Armstrong and Bryce Williams each doubled for the Flames (8-5), as six of Lodi's eight hits went for extra bases, much to the delight of Flames head coach Hobie Schultz.

"I like the way we are swinging the bats and making things happen," said Schultz. "We are getting hits with runners in scoring position and getting ahead early. It puts pressure on the other team and makes it easier for our pitchers to throw strikes."

Lodi scored four runs on four hits in the third inning as Clark, Armstrong and Hoover each had run-scoring hits off East Union (5-4) starting pitcher Marshall Swift. Clark and Hoover each drove in two more runs in the fourth to chase Swift from the mound in favor of relief pitcher Justin Zunino.

Clark retired nine of the first 10 hitters he faced before finally surrendering a run in the third when Kurt Johnson singled, reached third on a double by teammate Ted Anderson and trotted home on a double by Garret Fisher.

The Flames extended their margin to six runs as Conor Petersen drew a walk and Mike Toon reached base after being hit by a Zunino pitch. Clark then drove in Petersen with his third RBI of the game on a liner into right field for a 7-1 Lodi lead.

Clark ran into trouble in the sixth inning as East Union's Wade Morten led off with a solo home run to left field, followed by a walk to Johnson. Anderson reached on an error by the shortstop Williams and on the next pitch, Fisher connected on his second of three doubles on the day to make the score 7-3.

Schultz elected to replace Clark with Williams in relief on the mound and the Lancers Jon Shepard rudely greeted Williams' first pitch with a single down the right-field line, good for two RBIs as East Union cut the deficit to 7-5 with no outs in the frame.

Cory Hardesty reached first on a comebacker to the mound which Williams mishandled for his second error of the inning and Swift's bunt single loaded the bases for the Lancers with the top of the order coming up and still no outs. Williams then induced three straight flyouts to escape the jam and preserve the 7-5 lead for the Flames.

"We hit the ball hard today and we are known for making comebacks with rallies late in the game," said East Union head coach Dan Triglia of his squad, which outhit Lodi 10-8. "You can't ever count us out, but we did not play defense very well today."

Hoover clobbered a fastball from Zunino into the stadium's barbecue pit in the left-center power alley in the bottom half of the frame to give the Flames some breathing room with an 8-5 lead. Williams then got the save with three consecutive flyouts, and Lodi had its second win in as many days.

The Flames conclude tournament play today at 10 a.m.
