Galt City Council delays vote on city clerk raise
The Galt City Council delayed its vote on Tuesday night on a pay raise for the city clerk.
Higher pay scales based on a new pay-for-performance salary system were approved for the city's department heads last month.
Councilman Donald Haines asked for the delay to provide more time to study the matter.
The city's top officials have already been reviewed for a raise by City Manager Ted Anderson.
However, because City Clerk Liz Aguire is an elected official, a review of her potential raise will be conducted in public.
Her monthly salary range was boosted to a minimum of $6,171 to a maximum of $7,498.
As city clerk, Aguire coordinates documents for council meetings, handles public record requests, manages the city's Web site and serves as its public information officer, among other duties.
She said she's begun to put more emphasis on sending news releases to the press and making additions to the city's newsletters.
Crow in Herald tests positive for West Nile
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District confirmed Tuesday that an American Crow found in Herald has tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to a press release by the city of Galt.
The bird is the first sign of the virus this season.
"It is important that the residents of Sacramento and Yolo Counties pay close attention to this early warning sign, an indicator that West Nile Virus is active and present in our area," said David Brown, district manager, who was quoted in the release.
Brown urged residents to drain standing water near their homes to limit mosquito breeding, and to protect themselves by wearing long sleeves at dawn and dusk and wearing repellent.
"We need public support and participation, and must work together as a community to reduce the mosquito population in our area," he said.
To report a dead bird or squirrel, call (877) WNV-BIRD ((877) 968-2473) or visit the California Department of Public Health Web site at www.westnile.ca.gov. Contact the district at (800) 429-1022, or visit its Web site at www.fightthebite.com.

Rap star to perform at University of Pacific
Rapper Talib Kweli agreed to perform at University of the Pacific after more than 300 students requested a visit at his MySpace page.
Their demands were not totally unsolicited, though. Kweli set up a contest on his page in which students could ask him to come to their city.
Kweli, a social-conscious rapper who helped form the rap group Black Star, has been lauded by Jay Z and Kanye West.
Pacific actually lost the contest to colleges with larger student populations, according to a statement released by Pacific.
However, Pacific students didn't just stick to the contest. Students peppered Kweli with request through a student-made Facebook page.
— From staff reports.
Apparently, the two methods worked, and Kweli will perform at Pacific March 28 at Faye Spanos Concert Hall.
Tickets cost $12 for Pacific students and $22.50 for the general public and can be purchased at the Associated Students of University of Pacific office on the school's campus.
There is a two-tickets-per-person limit.
