Lodi officer recovering after shooting self in hand at firing range

By Layla Bohm

A Lodi police officer was released from the hospital Wednesday, two days after accidentally shooting himself in the hand at the city's firing range.

The officer's name was not released because the incident is considered an industrial work-related accident and is subject to medical privacy laws, interim Police Chief David Main said Wednesday.

The officer is expected to return to regular duty after recovering, he said.

Main declined to release the officer's rank or current work assignment, saying only that the officer is a "veteran" of the force. Main added that he consulted with the city attorney's office regarding privacy laws and release of information.

At the time of the accident, the officer was alone in the shooting range in the basement of the former police station. The city building, at 210 W. Elm St., is home to a fire station and formerly held a courtroom, and it will eventually house the Finance Department.

The police department has safeguards in place concerning the shooting range, but they will be reviewed following this week's incident, Main said.

Officers regularly practice in the range, and they must pass periodic scheduled shooting tests. If they do not pass, they must undergo more training to improve accuracy and then take the test again.

" Golly, first thing I thought was "Barney Fife!"

Seriously though, I hope the officer recovers fully from his "industrial work-related accident." Just glad he didn't have a SkilSaw in his hand... "

" If a round jammed that's one thing, but if it jammed and blew then he wouldn't have a hole in his hand, it would by a worse case. I am sorry this guy got hurt. My thinking is maybe the camera they want to put up town to spy on people should be on the range to monitor such a dangerious area. Then someone would have known about the "misfire" and got help to him. It would have be on tape to review. Not internet but a monitor to keep safe people the range.

" Every gun is loaded! Sorry for the LPD Officer who screwed up. I hope he makes a speedy recovery to get back out there and fight crime.

Guns are dangerous, in the wrong hands. But to someone who is trained, and sober, I for one, do not see an accident, unless a round jambed and discharged. That could have happened.

God Bless him regardless! "

" To D MAN

What do you mean that his career is over? David Main (your boss) says he will return to active duty! The fact is it was an accident made by someone who should know above all that a GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED! You must be able to play with your little toys before spending the taxpayers hard earned dollars on the big toys with 4 wheels and armor "

sam wrote on Mar 14, 2008 1:37 PM:

" But the visual of a profession putting a gun to his hand and pulling the trigger is beyond funny.

Why would ANYONE assume a gun is not loaded? "

sam wrote on Mar 14, 2008 1:37 PM:

" Well a drive to the grocery store reveals all in Lodi. He was shooting alone (i think they are suppose to go in pairs) and he "assumed" his gun was not loaded when he put it up to the palm of his hand and pulled the trigger. The fact that he got injured is not funny at all.
And I am glad he will make a full recovery.

"

WY wrote on Mar 14, 2008 11:04 AM:

" This is a good example of what NOT to do by a "seasoned" gun owner/Policeman.

ALWAYS ASSUME EVERY GUN IS LOADED AT ALL TIMES.

(is that OK to say?)

" I agree DMAN...This is what the blog section has become. A place for WY and others make fun of or criticize others! It is real easy to point fingers and laugh at others when no one knows who you are. This Officer will recover...fully...Mark my words! It is a mistake that ANYONE of us could make! "

" dman I feel sorry for the officer involved. However he can file for workmans comp and with that and his pension he should be okay until he is retrained or finds something else. "

dman wrote on Mar 13, 2008 9:27 PM:

" to the vast majority of the bloggers on this site, you are a very insensitive, intensely mean lot. This officer's career is probably over. A cop has to have full range of hand motion in order to be a cop. This is an industrial accident that many people have in various careers. Why do you show such hatred toward a police officer you dont even know? It is sad and beyond my conprehension. Shame on you all. "
