Lodi officer recovering after shooting self

A Lodi police officer was released from the hospital today, two days after accidentally shooting himself in the hand at the city's firing range.

The officer's name was not released because the incident is considered an industrial work-related accident and is subject to medical privacy laws, interim Police Chief David Main said.

The officer is expected to return to regular duty after recovering.

He declined to release the officer's rank or current work assignment, saying only that the officer is a "veteran" of the force. Main added that he consulted with the city attorney's office regarding privacy laws and release of information.

At the time of the accident, the officer was alone in the shooting range in the basement of the former police station. The 210 W. Elm St. city building is home to a fire station and formerly held a courtroom, and it will eventually house the Finance Department.

The police department has safeguards in place concerning the shooting range, but they will be reviewed following this week's incident, Main said.

Officers regularly practice in the range, and they must pass periodic scheduled shooting tests. If they do not pass, they must undergo more training to improve accuracy and then take the test again.

" Good to hear the officer is doing ok. Once his fellow workers are sure he is doing well and back on duty, he is going to be fed a steady diet of poo sandwiches. "

" s&w... OK I agree with you but there is protocal when it comes to a firing range. And he know it. He's gonna live and I don't feel sorry for him. He knew the sfaty rule and went against his better judgement. Now look what happened. Sorry No pitty here. This is a "SEASONED" officer.
Nope, not biting. And quite frankly He should be taken off for a bit. No fire arm! No squad car. no dog. no bike no tazer. No gun! He can keep the hand cuffs for fun. "

" dman you're just making me laugh more, thinking about a doctor putting his hand in front of a syringe thinking, "I wonder if it's sharp enough?" Lighten up dude. "

" It's kinda hard to shoot one's self in the hand! I hope my life is not on the line when he takes aim at a armed suspect to save my life! "

" whoops!! uh-oh sounds like that officer needs some more "hands on experience" with firearms. But I am glad to see that the fine civil servant is doing well. "

" Bob, I'm sorry I thought it was kinda funny too. Trust me, this guys gonna take a lot of flack from fellow officers for the rest of his career. Remember the Lodi S.W.A.T. team bust on Rutledge Dr. years ago. One officer tried to kick in an interior door. fell backwards into a fellow team member who shot him in the back. He had on a vest, but the impact temporarily paralyzed him. The funny thing is a guy escaped out the back door in his underwear. LPD missed the S.W.A.T. class that said "cover the exits" I guess. "

" Hey bob...never any accidents at your workplace?? With law enforcement, one of their tools is a firearm. Carpenters use nailguns, doctores use syringes,etc...accidents happen. Dont be so condescending "

" Crazy thought, but maybe, just maybe, they aren't releasing his name because he's embarrassed as all hell. Buford T. Justice comes to Lodi... "
