Local coaches say Favre among greatest QBs, but Montana tops the list
It's hard to argue that Brett Favre isn't one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the game. No. 4's passion and genuine excitement for football made him a fan favorite during his illustrious 17-year career, and the records he set clearly establish him as one of the all-time best.
But what may keep him out of the discussion as the sport's greatest ever is the wild, gunslinging style that he played, leading to his record for most career interceptions. In that sense, it was only fitting that he should end his career with a pick in overtime against the New York Giants, costing his team a trip to the Super Bowl.
Had Favre not been so free-wheeling, perhaps he'd have won more championships and better entrenched himself with ring bearers like Joe Montana.
Despite his shortcomings, fans will likely remember him more for his playoff wins at frosty Lambeau Field, his unprecedented improvisational skills and the fun-loving personality he brought to the field every Sunday.
And of course, 49ers fans won't soon forget Favre's utter dominance of the scarlet and gold, having posted an 11-1 record against San Francisco.
However he's remembered, there's no doubt that he will be missed and the NFL won't feel quite the same without him.
Here's what local coaches had to say about the Green Bay Packers star, and who they think is the best QB of all time.
Todd Dillon
Lodi High football coach
Thoughts on Favre: You really won't see Favre's greatness until five, 10 years down the road. That guy, he was creative; he could ad lib.
Best QB Ever: Dan Marino.
Why: In today's society they judge (quarterbacks) by winning the Super Bowl. But you've got to look at who they had around them. Montana had Rice. Elway couldn't do it until he had a running game. Bradshaw had the Steel Curtain and Lynn Swann.
But every year Marino did it with guys you never heard of. He was always right there in the end. They were always getting in the playoffs and you always had to defend him. They just never pLayed Any Defense For Whatever Reason.
Louis Franklin
Tokay High football coach
Thoughts on Favre: Brett Favre, statistically, would be one of the best quarterbacks. But it's usually based on how many championships you've won. He was a fearless gunslinger and he always put his team first. And other than that minor mishap with his painkiller addiction, he was a model citizen. He has to be up there near the top.
Best QB Ever: Joe Montana.
Why: Even as a Raiders fan, I have to say Joe Montana. If you look at a quarterback being a leader and winning championships, then you have to say Joe Montana.
Jeff Tracy
Former Tokay High football coach
Thoughts on Favre: I love Brett Favre; he's one of my all-time favorites. I've been a big Green Bay fan from day one. I had a big poster of Bart Starr on my wall. The thing about Favre is he just loves the game, he plays so hard. I think he's one of the all-time greatest competitors. I think his records are incredible. He's definitely one of a handful of guys you'd want at the end of the ball game.
Best QB Ever: Undecided.
Why: Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas would be in the top five. It's tough to say, I'm sure Montana ranks up there. But Favre and Bart Starr are my favorites.
Erv Hatzenbuhler
Former Galt High football coach
Thoughts on Favre: Consider after 17 years, Favre is still going strong. He's still capable of playing today. In the long run, you have to consider Favre right there.
Best QB: Joe Montana.
Why: Montana was such a clutch guy; either lucky as hell or just that great. Just look at what he did.
