Bicyclist hospitalized after being hit by car
Moments after a Lodi man bought a 12-pack of beer and began bicycling away from the market, he was hit by a car Tuesday and hospitalized, Lodi police said.
Justin Fields, 24, left Save Mart Foods, 1340 S. Hutchins St., and had just started pedaling east down the Kettleman Lane sidewalk, Traffic Services Officer Kelly Michaels said.
In the meantime, Roslyn Woodhouse, 21, of Lodi, was pulling out of the adjacent USA Gas station at 401 W. Kettleman Lane. She looked both ways and then turned right onto Kettleman Lane just as Fields reached her 2008 Toyota Yaris, Michaels said.
Fields was thrown off his bicycle and taken by ambulance to Lodi Memorial Hospital. He had a large laceration on his head and a suspected concussion, Michaels said.
Woodhouse, who was upset and apparently knew Fields, was not injured.
Most of the Budweiser beer bottles broke, leaving the smell of beer in the area and on first responders' shoes.
Fields was at fault because he was bicycling on the sidewalk in the wrong direction, Michaels said.
City of Lodi requests federal funding
The city of Lodi has sent U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasenton, three requests for earmarks in the 2009 federal fiscal year, according to a report released by City Manager Blair King.
Lodi is looking for $2 million to replace radio equipment that will become obsolete in 2013, when the FCC will require public safety agencies to move to a different frequency band; $850,000 for library improvements; and $250,000 to buy a bullet-proof police vehicle that could be used by other police agencies in the region.

County to develop airport business park
STOCKTON — Buildings for offices, air cargo, distribution, retail and services will be built in the Airport East Business Park in south Stockton.
The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors approved a master development agreement on Tuesday with Catellus Development Group, to construct the buildings.
The project will generate as many as 14,000 jobs to the area, according to Supervisor Leroy Ornellas.
The business park will be completed in 15 to 20 years on 550 acres.
The new county agriculture center is currently under construction.
Vallejo City Council staves off bankruptcy
VALLEJO — The Vallejo City Council has approved a deal that will keep the city out of bankruptcy, at least for now.
After a meeting that lasted about six hours, the council voted in favor early Tuesday morning of a last minute labor agreement officials reached last week with the city's police and fire unions.
Under the deal, police and firefighters will take paycuts. There will also be cuts to city services.
Without the agreement, city officials had said Vallejo would have run out of money in about a month.
Chico State instructor charged in pot bust
CHICO — A newly hired instructor at Chico State University has been charged in connection with a suspected marijuana growing operation.
Suspicious postal employees triggered an investigation last month after 42-year-old Elaine Ilana Meiri tried to ship a 3-pound package to Hawaii.
Police searched her home and reported finding 45 pounds of processed marijuana. They arrested Meiri and 56-year-old Denver Troyer. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Meiri and Troyer are being held until they can prove they did not use money from the sale of drugs to post bail.
Chico State hired Meiri a few weeks ago to teach Hebrew.
