St. Mary's wins section title, still unbeaten
It wasn't easy, but the St. Mary's High girls basketball team is once again a Sac-Joaquin Section champion.
The Lady Rams haven't faced many challenges this season, especially when it comes to programs in their hometown section. But one team that's always given them trouble is the Sacramento Dragons, who defeated St. Mary's 74-71 in last year's Division III title game.
It looked as if the Dragons (25-2) might accomplish the feat again on Friday at Sacramento's Arco Arena after rallying from a 16-point second-quarter deficit to take a two-point lead, but the Rams refused to let their section rival spoil their perfect season.
The top-seeded Lady Rams (30-0) responded with a 20-3 fourth-quarter run and closed out the No. 2 Dragons 81-68 to become the first undefeated section champion, boys or girls, since 1998.
The title is St. Mary's first since 2005 and ninth overall. The program is tied with Colfax for the third-most section titles. Only Ripon Christian (11) and Bear River (10) boast more.
The Rams, who are ranked eighth in the USA Today Super Preps 25 poll, will host Hercules (24-6) of the North Coast Section on Tuesday at Morelli Gym in the opening round of the Northern California championships.
A potential NorCal title game between top-seeded Sacred Heart Cathedral (29-0) and No. 2 St. Mary's would take place on March 15 at Arco Arena.
In Friday's section title game, St. Mary's was a dismal 7 of 30 (23.3 percent) from beyond the arc, and the Lady Dragons took advantage, rallying to grab a 62-60 lead with 5:40 to play in the fourth quarter. But the deeper Rams rolled from there, led by sophomores Chelsea Gray and Afure Jemerigbe, who scored 19 points apiece. Cortney French added 18 points.
In other section championship games, No. 1 Kennedy won the D-I girls title 46-31 over No. 7 McClatchy, No. 1 St. Francis won the D-II girls title 56-53 over No. 2 Oak Ridge, No. 1 Christian Brothers won the D-IV girls title 60-57 over No. 3 Modesto Christian, and No. 1 Bradshaw Christian won the D-V girls title 49-35 over No. 2 Wilton Christian.
Top-seeded Folsom defeated No. 11 Rodriguez 67-65 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to win the D-I boys title, No. 1 Rocklin topped No. 3 Fairfield 44-43 for the D-II title, No. 2 El Camino beat No. 1 Sacramento 89-76 for the D-III title and Forest Lake Christian won the D-V boys title 77-58 over Brookside Christian.
Former Tokay High standout D.J. Seeley scored 18 points as the second-seeded Modesto Christian Crusaders easily cruised past No. 1 Colfax 85-56 for the D-IV championship.
