I was amazed that some parents were debating whether or not their darling children should have to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance at the Joe Serna Charter School. What is there to debate?
Any kid who goes to school in the U.S. should be proud to be educated in the United States, should be proud of their country and the flag that represents it. They should be required to pledge allegiance to the flag and gladly do so. It teaches them love of country and the principles it stands for. And, since our forefathers founded this country on a belief in God, and the fact that God gives us certain rights that no human being can take away from us, they should be proud to say that we are one nation under God. How can that harm a child?
I would like to go one step further and say that they should recite the Our Father along with the pledge just like kids did in this country for about 200 years. Kids should be taught moral principles in school. I don’t think the schools should promote any particular religion, but there is certainly no reason why kids can’t be taught that it is wrong to steal, lie or fight, and that they should have respect for other people’s property.
Maybe if we taught kids moral principles, we wouldn’t have teenagers bringing guns to school and killing each other with them. Maybe we would have fewer teen pregnancies, and perhaps we would have more respect for law and order in our society.
While I am at it, I would recommend that they be taught how to read, write a simple paragraph and do simple mathematical equations. I would like to go to a fast food restaurant and, if my bill came to $4.85, be able to give the clerk $5.10 and have them know that they should give me back a quarter.
I see nothing wrong with educating kids, and if they learn love of God, country and their fellow human beings, I say it is a good thing.
