Lodi High sweeps SkillsUSA design contest
Lodi High School's SkillsUSA team cleaned up at San Joaquin Delta College's Engineering Day last week, taking several top spots and sweeping the advanced engineering design competition.
Senior Nick Iturraran led the Jan. 30 sweep, taking first place in the advanced engineering design. Fellow seniors Gareett Neuvert and Caitlyn Hartman followed Iturraran, snatching second and third place respectively.
"As far as I'm concerned that's a big deal," said Paul Guthrie, a drafting teacher whose students grabbed the top three places.
Sophomore Jessie Bonilla-Culp came up with a first-place win in the introduction to engineering design competition.
"(He) outshined everybody in his particular competition," Guthrie said.
• Alex Daneke, senior — second place
• Ryne Mettler, senior — third place
Architectural computer-aided drafting
• Jordan Kennedy, senior — second place
• Emily Edsell, senior — fifth place
Introduction to engineering design
• Jordan Thomas, sophomore — fourth place
Andy Cheng, a junior foreign exchange student from Taiwan who came to Lodi High with no prior engineering knowledge, nabbed the fifth-place spot in the architectural design competition.
The team competes today in the California SkillsUSA Region 5 Leadership and Skills Championship.
"I feel wonderful. I think we'll do really well," Guthrie said.
