Co-owner of Mattress Express in Lodi reports 'theft of entire store'
You know you're having a bad day when you get to work and the store is empty.
So what's your next step?
If you're a co-owner of The Mattress Express, you call Lodi Police to report the "theft of the entire store."
That's apparently what happened Monday morning to an owner of the 280 W. Kettleman Lane business, located next to the 99 Cent Store. Twenty minutes after the store's normal 10 a.m. opening, the owner was on the phone with police dispatchers.
Police soon learned that the other owner had cleared out the store without his partner's knowledge.
Since both names are on the business license, the matter will ultimately be either resolved among the two owners or taken up in civil court.
Either way, the short-lived business, with a "Furniture and Mattress Clearance Center" sign in front, is definitely closed.
The store is now completely empty except for silver bells still hanging from the front door to alert employees that a potential customer has entered.
Nobody answered the store's telephone, which went to an answering machine, and a message was not returned Wednesday. Neither owner could be reached for comment.
Just six months earlier, the store held a grand opening and ribbon cutting in July.
