Lodi man shot in head during apparent robbery drives home; police seek more information

The owner of a Lodi gun store was shot in the forehead last night after an apparent robbery — and then drove himself home unaware of his wound, police said.

"It appears the guy was the victim of a robbery and he was shot," Police Lt. Steve Price said. The man was being transported to U.C. Davis Medical Center late Thursday night. His condition was not immediately known.

Price said the man — who owns Nick's Gunworks at 440 E. Lodi Avenue — was reportedly getting ready to watch television at his South Mills Avenue home at about 9:30 p.m. when his wife noticed the wound.

Police responded to the single-story brick residence on South Mills Avenue shortly after, but could not find anything to indicate the shooting had taken place there.

"What we found at his residence just didn't add up," Price said.

That led them to the gun shop, where Price said there was some evidence of a shooting. He did not elaborate on what was found, other than to say a few things were out of place.

He said the police had no leads on who shot the man. He asked anyone with information to call Det. Nick Rafiq at 333-6747. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 333-6771.

A search of an online white pages shows Nick Flores as the shop's owner.

Price said the man is roughly 60 years old and that he had an "exit wound," where the bullet traveled in and then out of his head.

A Lodi fire captain at the scene said the man was "alert and conscious" while emergency responders treated him.

Drops of blood were visible on the home's concrete driveway, near the front of its garage.

Several officers shined their lights in the area, looking both on the ground and in two vehicles parked in the driveway.

A next-door neighbor said she did not hear a gunshot and did not know her neighbor well.

Price guessed the man had been unconscious for some time at the shop, following the shooting. He said the man likely could not remember what happened, a result of the trauma.

The man has not been able to give information about what happened.

Working so many years at the shop, however, the man likely had the route to his house "hard-wired" in and was able to drive home, Price said.
