A lifetime of giving
Local longtime member of Lodi Memorial Hospital Auxiliary enjoys helping others
During her lifetime, Leah Hesseltine has seen many changes. Instead of a bicycle, she had a horse.
"When I tell my grandkids I went to school in a horse and buggy, they can't believe it," she laughed.
A lifelong resident of Clements, Hesseltine, 94, enjoys giving back to her community. For 58 years she has served as a volunteer for the Lodi Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and is one of five of its original members.
Q: How did you get started volunteering in the Hospital Auxiliary?
A: A friend invited me in 1953. I have been in it for 58 years.
It started out with more Clements people and then they came to Lodi. We have people from Lodi, Clements and Wallace who serve.
We meet the first Monday of every month. When we first started out, there were 12 ladies. In 1953 when I joined, they had 11 branches, which were all named after grapes. Now, there are only six groups.
Q: What does the group do?
A: We have this big Valentine's luncheon annually. That's our biggest event. I have been on publicity right now. I'm the representative to the Mission Branch of the Auxiliary.
Q: What do you personally do?
A: I do what they tell me to. I'm a good follower. (Laughs.)
Q: How many people usually attend?
A: We have 35 tables of four. That's what we're hoping for this year.
Q: Why do you choose to volunteer?
A: I like working for the hospital. I feel like I'm working toward helping the community.
Family: Married for 54 years and has three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Occupation: Homemaker.
Education: Graduated from business college.
Hobbies: Traveling, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
The event will include lunch with salads and dessert, raffle baskets, a boutique with hand made items and a silent auction.
All proceeds will benefit the hospital. Gina Hesseltine, publicity and donations chair, said funds raised in the past have been used to purchase a newborn hearing screener, infant ventilator, blanket warmers and a bladder scanner.
The luncheon will be held at Hutchins Street Square from noon to 4 p.m. Cost is $20. For tickets, call Tina at 368-9047.
Q: What has been the most memorable moment for you?
A: Everyone says it's very nice for the community. I've been told that a number of times.
Q: Do you volunteer for any other groups?
A: I've been a member of Grace Church in Lockeford for 58 years. I was a Sunday School teacher for many years. When it got to the third generation, I thought maybe it was time for me to quit.
Q: What has been your most successful year?
A: Last year when we raised $6,000. That's the most any auxiliary had made for some time. We hope to do it again.
Q: What would you like to see for the future of the Auxiliary?
A: We can use more members. We are down to 26 members.
Q: What is the best decision you have ever made?
A: I guess I should say getting married. It was way back in 1936. I've seen a lot of changes in that time, especially living in Clements all my life.
Q: What has been the biggest change you have seen?
A: I think all the electrical equipment we have that makes life easier.
Q: What celebrity would you most like to meet? Why?
A: Pastor Charles Stanley, because I like his messages. I get up at 6 every Sunday morning.
Q: What do you enjoy about volunteering?
A: Just the feeling of accomplishing something for the hospital. Plus, we visit a lot and have a lot of fun.
