A crafty senior
LOEL Center volunteer enjoys giving time by helping with sewing and craft groups
Margaret Horst feels volunteering is her way of giving back to the community.
"I think it's a good cause and you should do something for your community," she said.
In the past, she and her husband were active members of the Disabled American Veterans. Today, Horst enjoys giving her time to the LOEL Center, where she takes part in the sewing group and the craft group.
Q: How long have you volunteered at the LOEL Center, and how did you get involved?
A: It was years ago. I got involved because I like to sew. One of the girls took me and I got involved in the sewing group. We sew bibs, which we call clothing protectors. I was gone for about three or four years when my husband got sick. I've been back about seven years since September. Then I got started in the crafts in the mornings because she needed help.
Q: What kinds of things do you do for the classes?
A: I just do what she has ready for us as far as the crafts. When we sew, I cut the bibs and sew them. We make crafts for Meals on Wheels. We do Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day, 4th of July, Halloween and Christmas.
Q: Why do you enjoy volunteering for the LOEL Center?
A: Because they are all elderly people. Everybody seems to be interested in one another. The directors are very kind and they try to accommodate you. I like playing cards on Mondays. They always have something going on. They use the building as much as they can.
Q: What has been the most interesting project the craft group has made?
A: I liked Christmas and Mother's Day. We made little sachet bags for the mothers. I enjoyed that.
Family: Was married for 54 years; has two children, two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Occupation: Homemaker.
Q: What are some future projects the group is working on?
A: We're going to start on Valentine's Day when we go back on Jan. 7. We're going to cut valentines, put a doily on top and get a wrapped chocolate heart to put on there.
Q: Do you volunteer for any other groups?
A: I also volunteer for Alzheimer's. That is really my main priority. That, to me, is very important. I help stuff the envelopes for the newsletter.
Q: Why do you choose to volunteer?
A: I think its a good cause and you should do something for your community. Once I got started, I really enjoyed it.
Q: What is your personal favorite craft?
A: I like Mother's Day. I think we're going to make some jewelry boxes this time. Someone gave us some cigar boxes. We're going to cut out something to put on there.
Q: What do you never tire of?
A: I never tire of sewing. I'm just in another world when I'm sewing. And I like to play cards.
Q: What is your biggest indulgence?
A: I like helping children. I don't mind cooking dishes for the children and grandchildren. I like my daytrips. I really enjoy those. I'm going to go see Riverdance in January.
Q: If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
A: Oh, I'd choose my husband, definitely.
