Volunteers search for missing woman
MILL VALLEY — Volunteers continued searching Sunday for a 25-year-old woman who disappeared almost a week ago after she and her boyfriend of two years broke up.
Veronica "Nikki" Ruiz, who works as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service, is believed to have wandered off into the densely forested Mount Tamalpais State Park on Dec. 3.
Friends, family and dozens of volunteers combed the park for any clued that would lead them to Ruiz.
Ruiz is believed to have been carrying her government-issued handgun and the weapon has not been found.
Ruiz' sister, Maricris Ruiz, said Veronica sent text messages to family members and friends in the early afternoon of Dec. 3, thanking them for their support.
Man accused of setting fire to his family's home
CONCORD — A Concord man is behind bars for allegedly setting fire to his family's home while his wife and their 9-year-old son were still inside.
Police say 45-year-old Richard Barnett doused gasoline on clothing and bedding in the master bedroom Saturday and ignited the blaze as his wife and son fled in horror.
Investigators say Barnett and his wife were going through a divorce and he did not want her to get the three-bedroom, ranch-style home.
They say the home sustained major smoke and fire damage.
Barnett's wife and son were treated at a nearby hospital and released.
