Internationally acclaimed singer Debra Cowan to perform in Lodi
Folk singer Debra Cowan will perform Saturday as part of The Arts at St. John's concert series. Cowan is credited with conjuring images of stony Celtic castles, rolling English landscapes and humorous urban scenes of America with her rich voice.
"Dad's Dinner Pail and Other Songs From the Helen Hartness Flanders Collection," on the Falling Mountain Music label, has earned her praise in the U.S. and Europe. Last year, Cowan was also included in the Free-Reed Records box set, "RT-The Life and Times of Richard Thompson" with her version of Thompson's "Has He Got a Friend For Me?"
Pete Krengel, who has been instrumental in bringing acts to St. John's, first saw Cowan at a festival in Oregon. He was amazed by her strong voice and was determined to have her perform in Lodi.
Where: St. John's Episcopal Church, 1055 S. Lower Sacramento Road.
Tickets: $10-$15.
Information: 369-3381.
"Debra is just a solid folk singer and our nation needs a good folk singer right now," Krengel said. "She's a person with a social justice conscience."
The Arts at St. John's kicked off the season with Sept. 29 performances of the NYCO and Sirly bands. Stanford University's student a cappella choir, Talisman, will perform in February. Led Ka'apana and Mike Kaawa, Hawaiian guitarists, will perform in April. Katie Todd, a Chicago-based singer and composer of edgy pop music, will wrap up the series in May.
The Arts at St. John's began in 1999, but became more popular in 2002 after the church moved to a new location on Lower Sacramento Road. In addition to church-sponsored concerts, St. John's is a venue that has been used by Stockton Chorale, Lodi Children's Chorus and Delta College Choir.
