A Lodi business is showing off its new Spyder vehicle, described as a cross between a roadster and a motorcycle.

Marina Boat Sales, east of Highway 99, will demonstrate 20 Can-Am Spyder GS Roadsters today to give the public an idea of what the new vehicle is like. The roadster has two wheels in the front and one in the back, resembling an oversized motorcycle.

With two wheels in the front, the vehicle has greater stability than motorcycles, said Kevin Monez, manager of Marina Boat Sales on Industrial Drive at Beckman Road. The vehicle is also offered at dealerships in Sacramento and Modesto.

The Spyder sports 106 horsepower and can reach speeds of up to 130 mph, Monez said.

"That's a lot of fun, man," said Dave Patterson of Camanche after taking a test drive Tuesday. "It's like riding a side car. It has plenty of power."

Steven Schneider of Tracy, who took the day off work to test drive the Spyder, said he didn't want the ride to end.

"I don't know about you guys, but I felt, 'Let's keep going,'" he said.

The Spyder comes in two colors, silver with black trim, which starts at $15,000, and a canary yellow vehicle with black trim, which costs $300 more.

The Spyder can be taken for short trips around town or for longer excursions, Monez said. It gets up to 35 miles per gallon, he added.

Manufactured in Canada, the Spyder is available in only seven states, and will debut in February in San Diego. Talk show host Jay Leno reportedly got the first Spyder off the assembly line, said Randy Sumrall, a product specialist from Southern California.

While visitors can only take a test drive between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. today, shipments will be available for purchase in two weeks, Monez said.

Schneider's half-brother, Steve Scherrer of Tracy, who also took the day off to take the test drive in Lodi, said that he and his brother discovered the vehicle two weeks ago at the Street Bike Races in Reno, Nev. They immediately wanted to take it for a spin, so they came to Lodi on Tuesday.

Patterson isn't sure if he plans to buy the Spyder.

"I'm waiting for the automatic," he quipped.
