Lodi is listening
What's on Lodi's playlist? Toby Keith? Fergie? Incubus? No matter what's pouring out of those speakers, we all have something that inspires us and keeps us groovin'.
There is something that happens when people talk about a favorite song. No matter what age they are or where they are in life, a slight smile turns up on their faces and they gaze off into the distance. Perhaps they are remembering a nostalgic song that played during a first kiss. Maybe it's just a reminder of afternoons spent driving in a car full of friends with the windows rolled down. Or maybe it's just the feeling of hearing a song that makes them want to dance like they did as a teenager.
It used to be that music lovers would have to switch 8-track tapes and records or create their own mixes on CDs or cassette tapes, but now many people are using playlists on MP3 players and computers. A playlist is a group of songs you can create based on moods or liking. You can title them anything you want: "Music for sleeping," "Rock Climbing Tunes," "My Summer Mix" or "Dad's Favorites," for example. The collection of songs is part of a larger music library stored to an MP3 player.
For Tokay High School students Kyle Young, David Chavez and Jessie Morante, the best part of the day is afterschool when they drive through Lodi in Young's blue Honda Civic, the windows rolled all the way down. They each have their own top picks, but they share a love for songs by Mac Dre and Sublime.
Almost everyone has a list of songs that take them to their favorite places, but they aren't all on a playlist. Medical assistant and barista Pat Bowles loves pretty much everything by Trisha Yearwood, Madonna and Huey Lewis. They're not stored on an mp3 player, but they're still her favorites.
Sitting outside of a local coffee shop, Jeremy Lovell flips through the songs on his metallic green iPod Shuffle that is clipped to his belt. With the start of each new song, his face lights up from under his black hat. He stares down the street, a smile on his face. It's obvious he's in a moment.
