Sentinel publisher's son has charges dropped

Prosecutors have dismissed misdemeanor fighting and public intoxication charges against a son of the News-Sentinel's publisher.

Robert Frederick Weybret, now 20, was one of two people arrested July 7 after a large fight at Salas Park on South Stockton Street. Police were called there at 1:50 a.m. after getting a report of 30 to 50 people involved in the melee, and several people later arrived at the hospital with minor injuries.

Weybret, the son of Lodi News-Sentinel Publisher Marty Weybret, was arrested on suspicion of challenging to fight. A Lodi police officer arrived at the scene and allegedly saw Weybret standing beside a vehicle, telling the driver to leave or he would be beaten up.

Prosecutors filed misdemeanor charges but last Wednesday dismissed the case, according to San Joaquin County court records.

A second man arrested during the incident, Antonio Lopez, 19, was also charged with fighting and public intoxication, and he will return to court Nov. 16. A witness at the scene of the fight allegedly identified Lopez as a man who had chased her with a hammer, according to police reports.

The prosecutor handling the case was out this week and Weybret's attorney did not immediately return a message.

Man arrested after fleeing over rooftop

A Lodi man with a history of legal troubles ran from police again Tuesday morning, fleeing over a rooftop and crashing through a covered patio in the process.

Andrew Wilburly Reid, 24, was arrested in the 400 block of Daisy Avenue around 3 a.m., police said.

Officers had initially been called to a report of people loitering a block away, but Reid allegedly fled when he saw police arriving. While officers were still dealing with the loiterers, dispatchers got a call reporting a man on a resident's roof.

The man then fell through a covered patio and ran as officers gave chase over fences and through yards, Lt. Chris Piombo said.

Reid was found and arrested in a yard in the same block, booked into jail and arraigned in court later Tuesday.

In addition to new charges related to Tuesday's incident, Reid was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear at jail to complete a sentence in connection with a previous police pursuit, according to San Joaquin County court records.

Teen hospitalized after drinking brandy

A 16-year-old Lodi boy was found drunk at a Lodi eatery Monday night and taken to a hospital.

Firefighters and paramedics were initially called to Boston Market, 514 W. Kettleman Lane, around 9:45 p.m. The boy's friends allegedly told firefighters that he had drank two bottles of brandy, according to a police report.

Due to the boy's extreme level of intoxication, firefighters called for police. The teen's friends fled when officers arrived.

The teen's blood-alcohol content level was measured at 0.13 percent, said Lodi Police Lt. Chris Piombo. California's driving limit for those over the age of 21 is 0.08 percent; in comparison, the teen's level would have been much higher if he had actually consumed two bottles of brandy.

However, Piombo said, it was not known if the boy had just consumed the liquor and his blood-alcohol levels were still rising when he was tested.

The teen was cited and released to his mother.

13-year-old found with knife on campus

A 13-year-old Lodi Middle School student was cited Monday after bringing a knife on campus to defend himself, police said.

The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was called to the principal's office Monday afternoon at the South Ham Lane school. In his pocket he allegedly had a folding knife with a blade measuring threeand-a-half inches, according to police.

The boy allegedly told police that he was carrying the knife because he had problems with gang members, but denied that he was a gang member.

Assembly candidate gets endorsement

Paul Hegyi, a Republican candidate for the 10th Assembly District seat being vacated by Alan Nakanishi, R-Lodi, due to term limits, has announced he has been endorsed by Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.

The announcement of McCarthy's support comes on the heels of endorsements from other California Republicans, including past California Republican Chairmen Michael Schroeder and Shawn Steel, State Sens. Dennis Hollingsworth, R-Murrieta, and Mark Wyland, R-Carlsbad, Assemblyman Todd Spitzer. R-Orange, and former Assemblyman Tony Strickland.

Hegyi is seeking the Republican nomination against Jack Sieglock of Lodi, David Sander of Rancho Cordova and Helen Baumann of El Dorado Hills.

The 10th Assembly District includes the Lodi area west of Bruella Road, Herald, eastern Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, El Dorado Hills and part of Amador County.
