Local brother team opens business to help companies make paperwork more efficient
Two Lodi brothers are looking to help local businesses cut down on the paperwork.
Brad and Brandon Stevens, who grew up in Lodi and are third-generation Lodians, opened ScanAndHost on Aug. 1.
The business scans large volumes of documents for companies and then creates searchable databases. The idea is to eliminate packed file cabinents, help offices go paperless and let customers find specific documents using only a name or a single sentence.
The Stevens brothers and their father, Richard Stevens, spent the past year-and-a-half developing the business. The elder Stevens, a certified public accountant specializing in the design of computer applications for his clients for more than 35 years, has had his share of frustrations in managing paper documents, according to Brad Stevens.
"Over time, he saw his stored documents increase immensely, taking up valuable office space and ultimately creating the expense of offsite file storage," according to the ScanAndHost Web site.
So how does this system work?
Attorneys can put casework or wills into the computer, for example, and CPAs can use the system to "file" clients' income tax returns, said Brandon Stevens. Or you can input your clients' utility or cell phone bills.

Business people can do the work themselves, but most companies have scanners that can scan only one page at a time. Through ScanAndHost, 500 pages can be scanned at once, up to 120 pages per minute, Brandon Stevens said. The cost is 12 cents per page.
Once the system is in place, the business person can access documents within seconds with a simple search.
Brandon Stevens gave an example: A customer calls a business and asks for a second copy of an invoice. The business person can then do a quick search, locate the invoice and e-mail it to the client while they're still on the phone.
"They're going to find it in seconds instead of minutes or hours or days," Brad Stevens said.
Before joining his brother, Brad Stevens, 27, aspired for a career in newspaper and TV sports journalism. He later investigated commercial liability claims for an insurance company. He and his wife, Sarah, have two daughters, Elizabeth, 3, and Emily, 9 months.
Brandon Stevens, 24, received a business degree this year at California State University, Monterey Bay. He is engaged.
