Letter against helping aquifer made no sense

Updated: Saturday, September 15, 2007 7:15 AM PDT

The letter printed by Bill Fuhs, which was against helping our aquifer, made no sense, other than he is consistent about blaming all problems related to a lower water table on Fred Weybret.

Can anybody who knows Fred readily imagine him out there draining our aquifer for the last 30 years? Yep, it was Fred who drilled all those wells into the aquifer. Yep, he installed all the pumps.

Yep, maybe he should be blamed for the dry winter, too. Yep, according to Fuhs, the efforts by Fred and the NSWCD to preserve and recharge our aquifer are bad and should be stopped by signing a petition.

So, here we are with a declining aquifer that has a river running across the middle of it (i.e. the Mokelumne) that two years ago overflowed its banks and gushed with excess water running off to the ocean.

It often does that in wet years. Yet it is a bad idea to channel that excess water into the aquifer. According to Fuhs, the water district's funding should be taken away by signing a petition so it can't build systems to put this water to beneficial use to replenish our aquifer.

Isn't this kookery? Is it better to send water rightfully belonging to the people of this area downstream to others, or to the ocean?

" How does anything the water board do help the aquifer? This is just another tax on landowners. Run the numbers on rainfall, land area and soak in. These people in the country are already replenishing the aquifers, it is the city that is depleteing it. "

" Most water used by farmers goes to food crops and back in the ground/aquifer. The cities pump from the ground and then pump the water to the delta. Why not make the surface water available to more farmers, Im sure they could use it to grow crops and recharge the ground water. "

" I used to live at the Mokolumne, and I can't believe how little water was running down it some years, below the dam. Personally, I don't see how they could get anymore water out of it. "

" "Excess water gushing into the ocean"??? What, exactly, does that mean in the context of a river? "
