Tigers kick off new era in style

With a slew of new head coaches and new players stepping up to fill the shoes of last season's departed stars, picking the weekly prep football winners is always tough in Week 1. Established programs normally have the edge, but upsets could abound. Here are the picks:

Tokay at Downey

The Louis Franklin era starts off with a win on the road as the McCurdy brothers play pitch-and-catch for the Tigers.

TOKAY, 31-17

Sheldon at Lodi

Respected coach Ed Lombardi's Huskies are always talented and deep. Despite skilled, experienced starters like RB Jordan Whitley and lineman JoJo Duenas, the Flames lack depth.

SHELDON, 34-20

Elliot at Capital Christian

Already banged up and battered with a thin bench, Elliot won't be healed in time to stop Capital Christian QB Kramer Hagan.

CAPITAL CHRISTIAN, 34-14

Galt at Franklin (Elk Grove)

An improving Galt squad will battle Franklin tough early before succumbing to inexperience.

FRANKLIN, 27-14

Vintage at Lincoln

Lincoln will count on the arm and foot of QB/K Robb Post and the bulk of USC-bound lineman Matt Meyer (6-8, 290) to subdue Vintage and new coach Billy Smith.

LINCOLN, 28-14

Grant at Franklin

Franklin opens the first of seven home games this season against an angry Grant squad smarting from a 28-21 loss in the final two minutes last week to state-ranked Bakersfield.

GRANT, 35-21

Antioch at Edison

Antioch will open the first of five straight preseason games on the road with a loss to a vastly improved Edison squad.

EDISON, 38-10

Hughson at McNair

McNair will be looking for its first-ever win against Division IV power Hughson.

HUGHSON, 33-14

Chavez at Stagg

With a roster chock-full of talent, will this be the year Don Norton's Delta Kings get back on the road to respectability?

STAGG, 27-14

West vs. Tracy

Moving one of the area's biggest rivalries to the Friday night light center stage to open the football season was pure genius.

WEST, 17-14

Argonaut at Bear Creek

Bear Creek head coach Barbaro Perez will make sure his Bruins don't overlook this perennial Mother Lode League title contender.

BEAR CREEK, 21-7

St. Mary's at Jesuit

Jesuit won't forget last season's 28-14 loss now that St. Mary's has lost its starting QB, RB and WR to graduation.

JESUIT, 24-17

" Yeah, Lodi Fan, season openers are always a crap shoot, one never really knows what one is going to get when one hasn't seen a new team play. With Sheldon beating Lodi every year for the past several years in a row, had to go with Sheldon until proven otherwise. The Sheldon pick was due to its Coach, Ed Lombardi, who usually has very good teams. Congrats to the Flames, who proved it otherwise. "
