Lodi Flames
COACH/YEAR: Tim Stutz is in his sixth season (he served as a co-coach with Don Rostomily for five years).
LAST SEASON: The Flames finished second in the San Joaquin Athletic Association with a record of 10-3-2 and won their playoff opener against Beyer before losing to Atwater in the second round.
KEY RETURNERS: Seniors Mike Weybret, Dakota Stroh, Will Darsie, John Clemons and Ricardo Ochoa; juniors Nick Day and Zack McCarthy.
KEY ADDITIONS: Seniors Wayne Jordan, Alen Masic and Francisco Magana; juniors Fidel Gomez, Robert Rameriz, Diego Juarez, Amulfo Gonzalez, Jon Ford, Ruben Araujo, Eduardo Araujo and Javier Santibanez; sophomores Jorge Diaz, Justin Machado and Erik Balanos.
LEAGUE FAVORITES: Stutz says Lincoln and Franklin are the favorites, but said Lodi and Tracy should also compete for the title and a playoff berth.
NOTEWORTHY: The Flames have three foreign exchange students on the team. Ann-Ting Cheng is from Taiwan, Shunsuke is from Japan and Kai Heinius is from Germany. ... The Flames made the playoffs last season after a two-year drought. ... Lodi will have to replace graduate Kevin Sanden, who was named the SJAA MVP Goalkeeper last season after recording eight shutouts in league contests.
Tokay Tigers
COACH/YEAR: Ruben Gomez is in his 19th season.
LAST SEASON: The Tigers finished second in the Tri-City Athletic League with a record of 9-5-1 and lost in the first round of the playoffs against Atwater.
KEY RETURNERS: Senior halfback Jairo Cortes, senior forward Javier Cristerna, senior forward Sam Gonzalez, senior halfback Kaj Jewell, senior fullback Mike Kludt, senior fullback Luis Ordinola, junior halfback Josue Razo, senior fullback Jordan Salazar, senior halfback Manuel Santoyo, junior fullback Ammar Sablaban.
KEY ADDITIONS: Junior halfback Luis Ordaz, junior halfback Julio Gonzalez.
LEAGUE FAVORITES: With most of last year's squad returning, Gomez said his veteran-laden Tigers should be in the title mix. Gomez said West, McNair and Edison should also be tough. "There are no easy games," he added.
NOTEWORTHY: Gomez says most of the positions are settled except for goalkeeper. ... Tokay has advanced to the playoffs three of the last four seasons. ... The Tigers return five all-league players.
Galt Warriors
COACH/YEAR: Bob Merten is in his fourth season.
LAST SEASON: Galt finished second in the Sierra Valley Conference with a record of 4-5-1 and defeated McClatchy in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Rocklin in the second round.
KEY RETURNERS: Seniors Randy Houghtaling, Manuel Cardenas and Herman Vasquez.
KEY ADDITIONS: Junior Antonio Villabos.
LEAGUE FAVORITES: Assistant Dario Meza, who is also the JV head coach, says Galt and Ponderosa should compete for the league championship. The Warriors return several key players from last year's team.
NOTEWORTHY: After missing the postseason for 15 straight years, the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs the last two years ... Meza says senior midfielders Cardenas and Houghtaling are the team's captains. Cardenas will lead the offensive attack and Houghtaling is also a major scoring threat.
Elliot Eagles
COACH/YEAR: Kelly Broesamle is in her first season.
LAST SEASON: The Eagles finished first in the Harvest Christian League with a record of 7-1-1 and won in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Sacramento Country Day in the section semifinals.
KEY RETURNERS: Seniors Ryan Hayashino, Matt Howen, John Drenbinger, Matt Hagen and Adam Koehler.
LEAGUE FAVORITES: Broesamle said she isn't familiar enough with the league to pick favorites.
NOTEWORTHY: Broesamle, who moved to Lodi from Orange County, coached for six years at Laguna Hills and Costa Mesa high schools. Broesamie played soccer at Concordia University.
