Elderly man injured in collision
Updated: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 8:49 AM PDT
An elderly Lodi man was hospitalized Friday after the truck he was riding in hit another car at the intersection of Hutchins and Lockeford streets.
Roy Gruwell, 82, hit the windshield during the 1:19 p.m. collision, Lodi Police Motor Officer Larry Vietz said. Gruwell was admitted to Lodi Memorial Hospital, where he was later listed in good condition.
The crash happened after a Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Brittany Toccoli, 19, of Stockton, drove north on Hutchins Street and arrived at the stop sign, Vietz said. A westbound driver stopped at the crosswalk and motioned Toccoli to go, even though that driver did not have a stop sign, Vietz said.
A Dodge Dakota truck, driven by Christine Yates, 68, was traveling west in the far lane, and Yates didn't see Toccoli's Volkswagen in time to avoid a collision. Gruwell was a passenger in the truck and was not wearing a seat belt, Vietz said.
Though another driver waved Toccoli across the intersection, Toccoli is ultimately the one who violated the right-of-way law, Vietz said.
