Ed Waldo, a fun-loving carpenter from Galt who died in April, will be honored this weekend at the first Ed Waldo Benefit Fishing Derby at Lake Amador. Organizers hope it will become an annual event.

Friends, family and people in support of a good cause are stocking their tackle boxes with gear in hopes they will catch the largest fish in this two-day event. Prizes vary from $500 for the largest trout to $250 for the largest black bass and $100 for the largest non-target fish.

Tickets for raffle prizes can be purchased at Stogies Cigar Lounge in Lodi, Hunan House in Galt or the Herald Store. Winners do not have to be present to win. Raffle prizes have been donated by Stogies, Atlantis Casino Resort, Peppermill in Reno, Sorensen's Resort in Hope Valley, Carson River Resort, Camanche Hills Hunting Preserve, Lockeford Springs Golf Course, Shantes in Lodi, Hunan House, Les Schwab Tire and Carson Valley Inn. Prizes include hotel stays, tickets to the San Francisco aquarium and a Giants game, wine, fishing rods, shotguns, a bicycle, bumper boat, camping gear and gift certificates. Funds raised at the benefit will go toward education, clothing, sports and insurance for Waldo's three children, James (Bubba), Ronni and Eddy Waldo Jr. The children — all between the ages of 12 and 18 — now live with their grandmother.

"He was a single father, a mother and he was great at being both," lifelong friend Tom Stribling said.

Waldo died April 17 this year following complications with appendicitis. He was 42.

Friends like Stribling say Waldo was a one-of-a-kind man, a man whose only other priorities beside his children was enjoying life and his friends. He's remembered for the way he told stories and for stealing the show with his charismatic personality.

"When he held a conversation, he would be so into it," Stribling said. "I miss the stories. I miss him."

The derby begins Aug. 18 at sunrise with the weigh-in deadline at 8 p.m. Sunday's final weigh-in deadline is 1 p.m. There will be a $25 charge for the adult derby and barbecue. Children under 15 can participate in a special derby for $10.

" Parents with kids who complain there is nothing to do need to take their kids to this event. Eddie, as a single father, always made sure his kids had something to do. He set a high standard for married and single parents raising their kids. Like the song says "only the good die young' and he was one of the best. See everyone there this weekend "
