Acampo soldier returns from Afghanistan

U.S. Army Sgt. Jesse Brucker will be back home in Acampo in about a month from now after serving 16 months in the eastern mountains of Afghanistan.

His family in Acampo is relieved that Brucker survived his tour of duty unharmed, but he'll forever endure the scars of several friends being killed in Afghanistan.

Brucker is spending his final days of duty with the 10th Mountain Division headquartered at Fort Drum, N.Y., about 100 miles north of Syracuse and 30 miles from the Canadian border. He received a hero's welcome during a brief visit to Acampo in July.

Brucker headed a 39-member rifle team in the steep Afghan mountains, where they relied on donations of basic necessities from back home — such as personal hygiene items, snacks and warm-weather items — according to his mother Candy Brucker. Friends and churches from Lodi, Woodbridge, Acampo and Galt shipped dozens of boxes of items to Brucker and his platoon.

During a recent welcome home celebration, Brucker received a special certificate of congressional recognition from Galt Vice Mayor Andrew Meredith, who is also commander of Galt's Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Ernie Giuseponi of the Galt VFW.

A 1995 Galt High graduate, Brucker also received a personal letter from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a photograph from Gary Sinise of the "CSI: New York" television series.

Brucker is scheduled to be discharged on Sept. 9, but he will spend about two weeks crossing the United States to visit families of the soldiers he knew who were killed in Afghanistan, Candy Brucker said.

Jesse Brucker plans on a career in law enforcement, his mother said.

" Leonard: That's a great thing you're doing. It's hard to believe that our service people are not getting the best of supplies let alone just some basic things they need, especially to keep them safe. "

" Thank you for your service, Sgt. Jesse Brucker! I hope you know how much we all appreciate you. You are a thoughtful man to make sure you stop at the homes of your lost friends before coming home to Acampo. I can only imagine the pain in your heart. I pray that you will lend some comfort to the families that made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their loved ones in this war. God bless you and your family. Safe travels to you. Thank you. "

" The boresnakes are a great tool to be able to clear the barrel of excess carbon, or dust. There are many organizations that allow people back home to send care packages to the troops over here. anysolder.com is one where I am a representative for my unit. Welcome home Jesse, Im looking forward to my return in about 5 more months. "

" Project Boresnake has various different kits depending on the weapons being used by the unit in question. You can get more, detailed info from the following link: http://projectboresnake.org/moreinfo.html These guys are doing good work, they have shipped over 15,000 cleaners which translates into a considerable number of saved lives. " I looked it up on the internet. They have all kinds for different caliber. What would be the best one to buy that would be for the my Army guys. Might be something good to toss in the boxes. Not to bad price wise, just about 14.00. What's the deal with you? Do you get them cheaper? Can you get cases at a time? "

WY wrote on Aug 13, 2007 4:04 PM:

" Can I go online and find out more? I have never heard of them. (That's not saying much.) So, The kits are OK for back at the hooch but these can be taken along for those long block parties, and special road trips. Would a guy take apart their weapon out on a mission? or it's just all around a good cleaning device for when ever. "

Leonard wrote on Aug 13, 2007 2:19 PM:

" Essentially, the things are a length of cloth tubing with cleaning wires woven into them and weight attached to one end. "

Leonard wrote on Aug 13, 2007 2:18 PM:

" Wy: Boresnakes are a tool that can be used to quickly field clean a weapon without any sort of stripping. They can mean the difference between life and death in a fire fight where a weapon is being used heavily over an extended period of time. My understanding is that, while soldiers are issued more cumbersome field cleaning kits, they only carry bore snakes if they have purchased them theirselves or have been given them by others. "

" I hear through the Soldiers Angels that some 3000 Marines have been extended and could use a moral boost. Soldiers Angels is looking for help right now for the lil extra support for these Marines. You could type in .. SoldiersAngels.org, then sign up, then request a "Extened Marine" adoption. They will set you up with a troop to support. It's a good thing! :) "

" PACKED WITH PRIDE A local ORG. That is a tax deductable gig. They take donations of different types. Granolla bars or FAT checks for shipping needs. The shipping went up this year. It takes 10 bucks to ship a flat rate now. You can get a lot of things in one flat rate box. Our Troops need our love and support! "

" Leoanrd... Don't they get things like that through the branch of service a Soldier is inlisted with? Keeping their weapon sand free and clean would be a priority. Do they need this sent over to them? I would think it would be like water, very important. The weapon has to work. Is it, they go through them faster? Sending soft rags and Q-tips and zip lock baggies, is a good thing too. "

" This article is a good reminder that we need to continue to show our support for our troops in a material way. It is all fine and well to slap a yellow ribbon on the back of your SUV but remember that our brave soldiers have real needs. On organization that I support is Operation Boresnake which sends firearm cleaning kits to our combat troops in the field. "
