Whittock, who swam 150 yards, biked four miles and ran one mile, finished in a record time of 24 minutes, 26 seconds, topping the previous best mark in his age division by more than two minutes.

"I didn't even know that I had won at first, so I was pretty excited when I found out," Whittock said.

Whittock added that cycling is his strongest event.

Family:Mark and Tina Whittock, parents; two brothers, one sister.

Favorite sport:Triathlons. "I enjoy the challenge of all three sports combined. When you win it's a pretty amazing feat," said Whittock, who started competing in triathlons last year.

Favorite athlete:Cyclist Lance Armstrong.

"He overcame cancer and didn't stop believing in himself," Whittock said of the seven-time Tour de France winner.

Favorite hobbies:Playing with LEGO blocks. Whittock said he once built a replica of the Empire State Building.

Favorite class:French and geometry. "People think learning French is hard, but it's actually pretty easy and the teacher makes class fun," Whittock said.

Would like to meet:His uncle John Whittock, who died before Mark was born.

"He was an awesome tennis player and runner."

Crowning achievement:Winning Sunday's triathlon. Whittock's previous best finish was a top-10 showing at last year's Davis Triathlon, which he will be competing in again this Sunday.

Plans:Whittock plans to graduate from Stanford with a doctorate in aeronautical engineering and to work for Boeing as an engineer.

"Stanford is a good school, and I want to go to the best there is," said Whittock, adding "I've always been obsessed with airplanes."

Whittock is currently trying out for the Lodi High frosh-soph soccer team.

Athlete of the Week | The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Whittock will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
