City OKs permit
Downtown Lodi motorcycle show rumbling into town on Saturday
The Downtown Lodi motorcycle show is a go for this Saturday. The city is expected to issue an encroachment permit today to close two blocks of School Street after the event organizers purchased a costly insurance policy.
"They will get their permit," City Spokesman Jeff Hood said Thursday.
There were some minor changes needed in the wording of the insurance policy, which Hood said would be worked out today.
The city asked for a $5 million policy after consulting with risk management experts. Most events Downtown require a $1 million policy. City officials were concerned that the event, which will draw hundreds of Harley-Davidson riders Downtown, could get out-of-hand. Officials say it will cost $1,500 in police overtime.
Event organizers say the show, which will include live music and vendors, will be family oriented. They say motorcycle riders are usually well-behaved citizens with an undeserved bad reputation.
"There's a lot of misconceptions," said Chris Ranuio of Valley Harley-Davidson, one of the organizers. "When it's all said and done, people will say: 'Hey, that was pretty cool. It was nothing like I thought it would be.'"
The permit will close two blocks of School Street from Pine to Walnut streets. Organizers originally asked to close three blocks. Additionally, Oak Street will be closed for half of a block on either side of School Street.
Ranuio said the insurance policy, which costs $4,000, will likely be split between Valley Harley and Lodi Beer Company, the other organizer.
Roger Rehmke, owner of Lodi Beer Company, said the city had placed unnecessary roadblocks for the event.
"I have a feeling that the city could be much more helpful for events Downtown," he said.
The event will begin with a ride from Valley Harley-Davidson in Stockton, through the Delta to Lodi. The Downtown bike show will begin at noon. The ride costs $20, which includes a meal at Lodi Beer Company and a drink. The bike show is free.
