Business boon or bust?

Some worry biker rally in Downtown Lodi will be hassle, not a help

Hundreds of Harley-Davidson motorcycles are expected to rumble through Downtown Lodi this Saturday as part of a rally its organizers describe as a family event that will be a boon to local merchants.

Some of those merchants and city staff, however, are a little worried the event could be more of a hassle than a help.

The Downtown Lodi Business Partnership is co-sponsoring the Lodi Bike Show and Rally, which will involve closing three blocks of School Street between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday.

City Manager Blair King said he is concerned about disrupting prime weekend business hours with 500 or so Harley-Davidsons.

"I have reservations of the fact that it involves a street closure on a Saturday," King said. "It will affect several businesses and the general public."

King said the city approved a permit application to close School Street between Walnut and Elm streets last week. According to the permit, an estimated 1,500 people will attend the event.

"I have reservations about the event, but it's up to the DLBP to chart their own course," King said. "The genesis of this event did not come from the city."

The other organizers of the event, Lodi Beer Company and Valley Harley-Davidson of Stockton, say the event will be family oriented and rowdy behavior will be discouraged.

"What we're trying to put together is more of a carnival atmosphere than a motorcycle thing," Lodi Beer Company Manager Corrie Gutierrez said. "It's going to be a family function."

Chris Ranuio of Valley Harley-Davidson said Downtown merchants could benefit from the increased traffic in the area.

"We want all the merchants to be comfortable with what we're doing and then come back and do it again next year," he said.

The Lodi Bike Show and Rally is set for Saturday. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Valley Harley-Davidson in Stockton, with a ride through the Delta, to Lodi. The bike show is on School Street between Elm and Walnut streets from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The ride is $20, which includes a meal and drink. The event on School Street is free.

Some business-owners Downtown are concerned that the biker rally won't drive the right clientele into their stores, and they complain that street closures hurt business.

"It's not going to help us any," said Nancy Chambers, manager of The Elizabeth Bridal Salon on School Street. "A lot of people don't come in when the street is closed. All they come in to do is use the bathroom."

Darrell Didreckson, owner of Sheri's Sonshine Nutrition on School Street, said he is not opposed to the event, just the street closure.

"Unless the bikers go from beer to vitamins, it's going to kill business," he said. "I love bikes and I think this is a great event, but I don't know why you always have to hammer School Street."

Ranuio said the event will start at Valley Harley-Davidson in Stockton. Bikers will ride into the Delta on a so-called poker run in which they will collect playing cards at different checkpoints. The ride will end at Lodi Beer Company, and riders with winning poker hands will receive prizes. The ride costs $20, which includes a meal at the Beer Company and a drink.

The School Street event will also include a bike show, vendors, live bands, food and drinks. Gutierrez said volunteers and Lodi Police will provide security. The Lodi Police Department signed off on the permit to close the street.

Gutierrez said the event would not likely get out of hand.

"It's not a late-night thing," she said. "We just want to promote the Downtown."

" Again its the mind set of old lodi and labeling bikers as BAD. if anyone does their research ALOT bikers are white collar workers, doctors, hard working honest citizens that choose to ride motorcycles as a hobbie or even if its a way of life.Because you ride a harley doesnt mean your not worried about your health SO SAD I THOUGHT LODI HAD GROWN UP, AND BY THE WAY I AM A BIKE AND I AM A PROFESSIONAL WITH NO CRIMINAL RECORD AND A NON DRINKER, DOES THAT MAKE ME BAD THINK ABOUT IT "

DT Merchant wrote on Jul 28, 2007 11:59 AM:

" If this is truly a Lodi Beer Co. event then the encroachment permit and liability insurance policy should have come from them and not the DLBP. By using the DLBP for the permit and insurance, LBC takes themselves off the hook for any liability and places it on the downtown merchant group as a whole. Thanks LBC for once again putting everyone else in jeapordy for your own personal gain! "

To: Tessa wrote on Jul 28, 2007 11:55 AM:

" Well said. It's too bad that the DLBP doesn't feel that its "customers" (i.e. ALL downtown merchants) come first! Events are supposed to be for the greater good of downtown as a whole, not just for a select few businesses like LBC....who, by the way, is only using the DLBP for the liability insurance policy they couldn't get on their own. "

" What the full quote said was having the events held downtown doesn't bring us more business that day, because our type of store is not one that people just stop into to by a wedding gown or tuxedo, all we have is people stopping in for is to use the restroom. We support the events Downtown, but our customers needs come first. "

" "All they come in to do is use the bathroom." And what was taken out if context?? As for the 25 lb dresses, look at this way, in about two to four years when these brides are toating a toddler on thier hip, they can consider it future training. "

" I am the owner of the Elizabteh Bridal salon. The quote from my store manager was used out of content. We are in support of any activity that brings people to downtown. Our problem is when they block our street off at 10:00am. I have brides who have 25lb dresses, who shouldn't have to walk 4 blocks back and forth. I would have no problem if they started at 2:00pm or 12:00pm, it will give our customers some time in the morning. We do not believe that is the wrong type of clientele for our store. "

" "These people"?? 'Playing poker and getting drunk"?? "Overly bleached blondes"??? Exactly where do you get your mis-information??? It’s a poker run, not a sit down poker game! You mean to tell me because I ride a Harley Davidson I'm automatically classified under one group?? Huh?? I do ride, my bike is not a barstool, I do have a college degree, I'm my kid’s mom and I'm not blonde. Oh, and I do shop in downtown Lodi, I adore those Mom & Pop stores. The merchants almost always have unique items that the 'Big Box' stores don't. Ignorance is bliss. "

Good Grief! again wrote on Jul 25, 2007 11:29 PM:

" About the noise a bike generates. Again, give me a break. How about the diesel 4x4;s with their tweaked mufflers that drive through downtown. The diesel long cab trucks, short cab trucks, etc. are just as loud or louder. And it seems as if everyone in Lodi drives a big Ford pickup. Come on here. Next time you are out driving around, listen to all of the noise vehicles generate on the road from the boom boom music to the jacked up mufflers and the bikes will seem tame in comparison. "

" every weekend downtown lodi has some kind of function where all of the sissy people of this town can meet. bikers dont go to your craft fairs or your wine sips and we are not asking you to join us, if you did the function would be a downer like all the other lodi events. so just stay home on saturday and let some of the other tax paying citizens of this town enjoy the same streets that you take over every weekend. i feel less intelegent for even responding to you people. Downtwon Merchant wrote on Jul 25, 2007 3:17 PM:

" Down at Stoogies, the bikes are SO LOUD, they rev the engines and spin the tires, you CAN'T talk to your customers in the store due to the noise. Those street are so narrow, the sound just bounces back and forth off the buildings and it hurts the ears and ruins business. Customers have walked out from our store due to the damn noise. "

" Who really goes shopping in downtown Lodi on Saturday afternoon? It is usaully pretty quiet at that time. Merchants, you would think you might like some business. People of Lodi, just because you ride a motorcycle doesn't mean you are going to cuase trouble. Look at my two cents comment. What is wrong with something out of the ordinary in Lodi. "

OTH wrote on Jul 25, 2007 1:48 PM:

" My two cents is absolutely right. Get the vision of Hells Angels and Outlaw biker groups out of your heads. Envision instead a hard working City of Lodi employee and his wife who works at the hospital enjoying a Sat. afternoon biker run. Or the Jay Leno's and Walt Gray's out their enjoying their Harleys. Come on people. Give me a break here. Not all bikers are bad hell-raising people. They go to church, work in the cubicles right next to you and yes, even shop downtown Lodi. "

Not the point wrote on Jul 25, 2007 10:32 AM:

" People are not going to want to come downtown to shop while "these" people are hanging out, playing poker and getting drunk. I dont think the wives will be visting any of the salons unless their overly bleach blonde hair was ruined while holding on to the back of the gorilla husband. Go down there take pictures this weekend then bring those pictures to the next planning commission meeting to show them the thugs, I mean college educated well mannered "gentlemen" that attend these events. " Lodi needs more events like this. It sets us apart from other communities. So what if you can't park in front of certain businesses. Most weekends you have to walk a block or two anyway. "

My two cents.... wrote on Jul 25, 2007 9:25 AM:

" Here we go again, spouting off before knowing the facts....the average H-D rider is 43, college educated, makes $68,000. This is not the reckless type. Most are married, with kids or kids headed off to college. Most of the wives will shop, they will visit the various shops on School Street, as that is what I thought the DLPB want to happen; increased foot traffic = increased revenue. I could be wrong though.... "

" Doesn't sound like a "family" oriented venue to me. Or is that Lodi's way of thinking family? Just pandering to another one of their gob's at Lodi beer at the expense of other downtown merchants. The police could be better served patrolling our own streets, particularly the east side than babysitting a bunch of adults at a beer and bike rally. Livable, lovable Lodi! I guess the word "charity" makes it OK. HA! Thanks blairbot, for another wonderful idea. Copy "
