Despite theft of ID and money, Lodi couple marries in Hawaii

A young Lodi couple had planned to marry locally in October 2008 but when they suddenly got the chance to go to Hawaii, they decided to have a beach wedding.

Sheray Barrett, 18, and Anthony Williamson, 23, had about three weeks to pull everything together. His company was sending him to Oahu for a month, so family members pooled money to help pay for Barrett's plane ticket, along with some extra money for the wedding and honeymoon.

Everything worked out and the couple went to the beach the first day Barrett got to Hawaii. She left her bag and towels on the sand and went about 20 feet away into the water — just far enough for a thief to get a running head start when he took her bag.

Barrett ran after him, but the thief got away with her driver's license, several hundred dollars, cell phone and borrowed digital camera. Not only did Barrett need her ID for the flight home, but she also needed it to get a marriage license.

Barrett's mother, Sherri Barrett, spoke by telephone with Hawaii's Health Department, which issues marriage licenses.

"It was so cute. She said, 'So you approve of this marriage?' and Anthony is such a prankster that I almost made them sweat for a few minutes," Sherri Barrett said.

The two did manage to get a marriage license and they had their beach wedding, with Sheray Barrett in a white sundress and Williamson in khaki pants and a white shirt.

They no longer had a digital camera for wedding pictures but made do with a one-time-use camera. Several people in Hawaii offered help, including hotel lodging.

The new Mrs. Williamson had to figure out how to board a plane without identification so she could get home to the couple's daughter, who turns 2 in September, six days after Sheray Barrett's birthday.

Williamson, who met Sheray Barrett because he is best friends with her brother, carries her old high school identification card in his wallet. That, combined with a police report, satisfied Hawaiian Airlines.
