Bev Hoag has lived in Lodi her entire life. She was even born in the same house as her mother. Later, she was a teacher at the same school her grandmother was a custodian in and where her mother was a student years earlier. At 78, Hoag says she finds a lot of things interesting and her eagerness to learn has kept her active in many organizations within the community.

Q: What groups do you belong to or serve in?

A: I was active with AAUW and am now bowing out. I held office and did a telephone tree where I was calling members to remind them of meetings. I was a partner for eight years and retired from that three years ago. I was a docent at Micke Grove Zoo for eight to 10 years. At one time, I served on the San Joaquin County Mental Health Advisory Board and was president for eight years. I was active with the teachers association. I recently quit tutoring with the literacy program. The lady I was tutoring is now going to Delta and working part time. I also helped to establish NAMI with three other people.

I'm still a docent at Hill House Museum one Sunday a month. I also work in the bookstore library. I'm still active with my sorority alumni, Zeta Phi. The group is no longer but we get together once a year for luncheon and raffle to raise money for scholarships for women.

Q: What has been your favorite group to work in?

A: Probably the Historical Society because of my background in Lodi and with family being here for a number of years. I also enjoyed working on the Mental Health Advisory Board.

Q: What kind of job did you have?

A: I was a teacher for 23 years here in Lodi at Houston School, then Heritage School and Lawrence School. I ended up at Beckman School. That was the most gratifying experience. One year I recieved the John R. Williams Award.

Q: What is the John R. Williams Award?

A: It is given by the San Joaquin County Teachers Association once a year. It is given to who they feel is a outstanding as far as an organization person as well as teaching. My submission was signed by a lot of teachers, so I was very proud of that.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: I knit and play pinochle. I love to do crossword and jig saw puzzles. I love to read. I don't understand when people say they are bored. I can always find something to do. I go to movies and see plays at Delta. Right now, I belong to a summer reading program at the library.

Q: What was the last book you read?

A: I just started reading a condensed version of The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks.

Q: What are your future dreams?

A: At 78, (laughs) well, I don't know. I just want to be able to keep on doing what I'm doing. Just to be able to get around and do things I enjoy. My future dreams are just maintaining my lifestyle.

Q: What is your best life memory?

A: I have traveled a lot. I've been a lot of places. I can't think of just one thing. There have been so many good things. I really enjoy my life. I have so much to be thankful for.

Q: Do you have any children, grandchildren?

A: I have two sons and three grandchildren. My grandson is about to be married.

Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?

A: I'm happy about everything I've belonged to, things accomplished and honors I've recieved. They are all precious.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.

A: I think I'm friendly. Also, interested because I'm interested in a lot of things. When people start talking, I think, "Oh that's so interesting." And, upbeat because I usually feel good about things. Most of the time I see the good side of things.

Q: What is the most interesting thing you have heard?

A: There hasn't been one particular thing. They say you learn something new everyday. That's very true. There is always something interesting out there to learn. I'm just a curious person.

Q: If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?

A: Probably more than one person; my family, the ones no longer here and the ones here. They are special and important.

" I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hoag as my 5th grade teacher at Houston School. What fond memories I have of that year and what a wonderful teacher she was. Mrs. Hoag you are truely an amazing woman, keep up with all your activities, you're still very young at heart! "

" I was also fortunate enough to have Mrs. Hoag as a teacher. She was one of my favorite teachers at Beckman. I still remember how wonderfully she used to read stories to us. Because of her I read the entire Indian in the Cupboard series. She was and continues to be an inspiration in my life. "

" Friendly, interested, and upbeat! These a excellent words to describe Mrs. Hoag. I had the priviledge of having Mrs. Hoag as my reading teacher in third grade at Lawrence school...she was always fair, looking out for our best interest (to get an education), and a good disciplinarian! It is good to see that she is still sharp...I will occasionally run into Mrs. Hoag arond town and it is refreshing to see that she does not lose a step! Take care Mrs. Hoag...I look forward to running into you again soon! "
