Officers searching for silver Chevy or GMC in fatal crash
Investigators narrow search for vehicle that struck Acampo boy
Investigators searching for a vehicle that struck and killed an 8-year-old Acampo boy last week have narrowed the search to a silver Chevrolet or GMC, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Monday.
The vehicle is a 1985-88 Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Jimmy or possibly a pick-up truck, Officer Adrian Quintero said.
Manuel De Jesus Jimenez, who had Down syndrome, slipped out of his Collier Road home around 9 p.m. and was hit by an eastbound vehicle. The child was dragged about 250 feet and died at the scene, according to the CHP.
Family members heard a noise and ran outside, seeing taillights of a car speeding away but no brake lights.
For two consecutive nights, investigators stopped traffic on the road near Bruella and Dustin roads, looking for witnesses and suspects, and also passing out fliers appealing for help.
Meanwhile, investigators were examining a piece of a grill left at the scene, which they did not publicly disclose. After visiting a junk yard and then cross-matching it on the Internet, investigators narrowed down the vehicle description, Quintero said.
The collision could have simply been a tragic combination of a small boy and a dark road, but those involved in collisions are required to stop. Officers want to find the driver and any witnesses.
"We'd just like to talk to you and get your side of the story," Quintero said.
