Tokay High valedictorian hopes to be an ophthalmologist
News-Sentinel Staff Writer
Anthu Do has dreams of becoming an ophthalmologist some day. After seeing Lasik surgery being done, she decided that was something she'd like to do.
"I thought it felt right," she said.
Do, 17, was surprised that she became valedictorian of Tokay High School, but she is excited about the honor.
During her years at Tokay, Do was president of the Vietnamese club, a member of the California Scholarship Federation, Spanish club, Conflict Management and SPIRIT. She was a tutor for the Vietnamese voluntary foundation, a teacher's aide at Hung Vong Vietnamese Language School and participated in the Storm Drain Detectives. She also played badminton, which her brother used to do.
"It runs in the family," she said, adding that she placed sixth in the league last year. "It's fun and competitive. I like it because I'm good at it."
Do's role models are her parents because they worked hard, as she aspires to be like them to accomplish her goals.
She plans to attend the University of California, Davis in the fall and go to medical school. She had the chance to see Lasik surgery at a Decision Medical program. At the conference, she was exposed to many different career choices in the medical field, and she decided to become an ophthalmologist.
In high school, she liked meeting people and having great teachers. She especially liked her AP chemistry teacher because he was "cool" and taught her a lot.
As for words to live by, she says, "Take life one day at a time, but don't be afraid to dream big."
