Why my Aussie friend understands our immigration failure
Over the past week, I spent some well-deserved rest and relaxation in Southern California. While there I enjoyed excellent weather, happy people and great food. But in the middle of getting away from it all, I was slapped back into reality by one question.
"So it seems as if the primary language in California is Spanish. Am I right? Because everyone speaks it or seems like they have to know it."
This question was asked of me by an Australian man who was visiting California with his family.
"Do you have to speak Spanish here?" the man continued.
There was a plethora of ways I could have answered this question. But instead of defending our government, taking pride in the American dream or telling the gentleman a garbage response like America is all about different cultures, I felt like telling the truth.
"The U.S. government continues to sit on the issue of allowing illegal immigrants to come into this country and take from our system and not be accounted for. In turn, none of these people learn English, nor can they write it. Our borders are still not secure and the president continues to dance around the issue because he has a vested interest in seeking amnesty and acceptance for the already 13 million lawbreakers who are currently in the country, not to mention the thousands who cross the border each day," I told the man.
The Aussie looked confused.
I'm sure I looked embarrassed I had to say something like that to someone from another country. After all, I wish I could be proud of my country's leadership.
The man then said, "So you tell me that your government isn't doing anything to stop this? Aren't they afraid of a takeover? Aren't they afraid of economic problems?"
Wow, I thought. If only President Bush or a single member of Congress could hear these words from this average Australian.
"That's what I'm telling you," I said to the man.
Again, he looked rather confused.
"Why wouldn't your country be concerned about something like that? They don't fear for these people going unaccounted for?" the man said.
I had to bite my tongue. This was one of those moments I'd never forget. This guy gets it. Why can't anyone on Capitol Hill?
The conversation continued and I continued to sit there, embarrassed and angry that I have to trash the name of our government because they make me do it.
The disturbing truth is that all of this is real. All of this is truth.
Little has been done since the issue became incredibly heated around three years ago. Sure, the National Guard has been incorrectly used and sent to "monitor" the border. This, of course, was a wonderfully strategic plan set forth by our fearless national leader, who wouldn't so much as allow these guardsmen to touch an illegal immigrant.
Numerous times has the National Guard come under fire by drug smugglers and immigrant messengers. You'd think then the guardsmen would be able to return fire and stop this from happening, right? Not so much. Instead, on each documented occasion, the guardsmen were instructed to retreat. That's right, retreat instead of stop this domestic terror and illegal activity.
Over the past few years, the "border crackdown" has even netted several border patrol officers because they fired their weapons at drug smugglers or dangerous illegals. Yes, border officers have been arrested for defending themselves. Some of them have even gone to jail.
Something seems awfully screwed up here. I'm still seeing illegals marching in cities, rallying against any attempt to curb illegal immigration.
I've wrote about this in the past. I've argued these points in debates.
But as the months roll by, I am seeing nothing done. Our government wants to grant amnesty to these lawbreakers? How about making things right and apprehending those who spit in the face of authority and law?
Why is it that this issue, one of the most important domestically, continually gets shelved?
If you ask me, all of Congress needs to have their salaries held until this issue is dealt with and done so right away. All those elected officials who must deal with this keep toying it along because they know the backlash all legal American's will put forth if this country is handed over to those who don't pay taxes, are a drain on legal resources and take from those who are productive citizens.
Illegal immigration is as much of an issue now as it ever has been. Hey politicians, you want to be re-elected? Then you will forget about greed through slave labor, you'll table your own interests in the benefits of illegals, and you'll do what you were put in office to do. You'll defend this country and its integrity.
By the way, the Aussie says that immigrants need to speak, as well as write, English in order to get into his country. You mean they don't just walk right in? What a concept.
