Man accused of stealing Lodi police uniform, badge

A 19-year-old Lodi man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly stealing a Lodi Police reserve officer's uniform and badge and then brandishing a gun at the victim's neighbor, police said.

Arturo Perales Jr. was subsequently arraigned Monday on felony charges of first-degree residential burglary and possession of stolen property, as well as a misdemeanor charge of brandishing a firearm, according to San Joaquin County court records.

Police were called to the area of Hartford Drive and Century Boulevard at 10:33 p.m. Monday after a resident said he confronted someone hiding in his bushes. The suspect pulled a gun from his waistband, so the resident ran and called police, Lt. Chris Piombo said.

In the meantime, a nearby resident waved police down to tell them that a man was hiding under her patio. Perales was arrested at the scene, Piombo said. In his possession, officers allegedly found a Smith and Wesson pistol that had been reported stolen in Modesto last October, Piombo said.

The police badge, uniform and handcuffs were stolen from a box in the garage where the reserve officer had just moved, Piombo said.

More catalytic converters stolen

Three more catalytic converters were discovered missing Monday morning from vehicles in Lodi.

The devices, used to control exhaust emissions, have become targets for thieves who sell the converters to recyclers. Recycling companies then break them down and get precious metals, including platinum, from the converter's core.

Catalytic converters cost at least $200 to replace, unless further damage is caused to a vehicle's exhaust system, according to previous victims and car dealers.

By 11 a.m. Monday, catalytic converters had been discovered missing from vehicles in the 400 block of Concord Street, the 300 block of Meadowlark Way and around the corner in the 1800 block of Songbird Place, according to Lodi police.

Thieves can easily crawl under the vehicle, usually a truck or sport-utility vehicle, loosen the bolts and leave just as quickly. Some victims have resorted to welding the catalytic converter to the vehicle.

Tokay to host drug abuse presentation

Parents and students are invited to attend a meeting at Tokay High School on Wednesday to discuss drug use and the abuse of prescription medication.

The event follows a drug awareness meeting held at Lodi High School in January and the introduction of drug sniffing dogs into Lodi Unified schools in February.

The Lodi Police Department is hosting the meeting that will run from 6 to 8 p.m. inisde the Tokay gym. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Galt clean up day

The city will hold a clean up and household hazardous waste event on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can bring unwanted appliances, untreated wood, tires, and other general waste to the Galt Market.

Participants must bring a city utility bill and driver's license or I.D. card to prove residency.

Hazardous waste will also be collected in a different area of the market. Pick-up service is also available and is limited to one truckload per household.

McNerney creates health care board

Congressman Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasenton, has created a health care advisory board, comprised of experts in many aspects of the health care field. McNerney will meet with the board today at 3 p.m. in Brentwood.

The discussion will focus on SCHIP, Medicare Part D and Medicare prescription drug plans and Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed health care plan.
