Mojo's closed after brawl; three arrested

Updated: Monday, April 2, 2007 6:40 AM PDT

A barroom brawl at Mojo's bar, 114 N. Sacramento St., that spilled onto the street caused Lodi police to close down the bar at 12:46 a.m. Sunday for what police described as safety reasons.

Two women were fighting outside the bar when a second fight broke out inside the building, said Lodi police Sgt. Bill Alexander.

Monica Zuniga, 26, of Hayward, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly smashing a glass onto the head of a 22-year-old Wilton woman, Alexander said. The Wilton resident had cuts to her face, police said.

In the second fight, a 23-year-old San Lorenzo man and a 23-year-old from Fresno were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public, police said. The East Bay man was also suspected of obstructing an officer.

It took about 20 minutes for officers to clear Sacramento Street, Alexander said.

Elkhorn School wins Science Olympiad

Elkhorn School's blue team from north Stockton took top honors at Saturday's Science Olympiad for grades 3-6, sponsored by the San Joaquin County office of Education.

Elkhorn's gold team took fifth place, and Woodbridge Elementary School's green team took 10th place.

Elkhorn also garnered a $1,250 Cortopassi Family Foundation grant.

Lodi Unified School District schools participating included Elkhorn, Julia Morgan, John Muir, Manlio Silva, Larson, Wagner-Holt, Woodbridge and Mosher elementaries. St. Anne's School in Lodi also participated.

Sacramento levees need $8.5 million in repairs

SACRAMENTO — Two levees protecting about 40,000 Central California residents from potentially catastrophic flooding need $8.5 million worth of repairs, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The corps — which finished the levees three years ago as part of a $32 million project — said the damage indicates "design deficiencies" that must be investigated, redesigned and repaired. The damage is primarily on the levees of the Yolo Bypass, an area north and west of West Sacramento that fills like a lake when the Sacramento River runs high.

Late last week, officials at the California Department of Water Resources said they could use funds from the $4.1 billion Proposition 1E levee bond fund that voters approved in November to help cover the costs.

But the state of the levees has left flood control experts disappointed. Three years ago, corps engineers told West Sacramento officials that the city had 400-year protection from flooding — a far higher safety margin than the minimal 100-year protection in other areas.

"Of course nobody likes to spend money to fix something that just got built," said Rod Mayer, chief of the flood management division of the California Department of Water Resources. "We like to get it right the first time."

Ken Ruzich said the damage is on the surfaces of the slopes — not deep within the levees. They need to be repaired but do not pose imminent danger.

" To "I was there" and "inferior investigation"- Thanks for your comments. I'm sure MoJo's would be appreciative of a letter written to the City Manager (Blair King), the Chief of Police and to the editors of both The Record and Lodi News Sentinel. I heard people have already been doing this and dropping them off at MoJo's. Isn't is time the facts were shared with the public? "

" to: to Lodian: Yes, I do know of this. It's all so ridiculous. There has been such a struggle with this skate park from the very beginning. Those that oppose the park just don't get it. These are the same people that complain about skaters going by on the sidewalk in front of their house. Don't they see that the skate park is a place for skaters to actually skate? I just don't understand the narrow-minded mentality of those that take issue with this skate park and skaters in general. Simple minds I guess. "

" Did you know that Diede Construction was willing to donate the skate park to Lodi under the condition that the city make it free to all? But Lodi CC said NO. They wanted to "control" the skate park. I agree that there are a lot of great youths who are skaters. "

Don't let the punks have their way and destroy another good thing Lodi has to offer. Here is the information to contact Lodi's Mike Reese regarding this issue. Thanks... prdept @ lodi.gov AND Parks and Rec Main Office: (209) 333-6742 "

" wellwell: Extensive damage? And yes, there was news in the paper about the skate park and the ridiculous idea about closing it so the majority, which are great kids, no longer get to enjoy it. If we close all parks in Lodi that have graffiti/vandalism then we wouldn't have any parks at all in town. Perhaps a good look at Salas Park is in order as that's where all the creeps hang out. Don't go there alone or you'll see what I mean. Lodi need to get their priorities straight regarding this skate park. These skaters are not the problem. "

" Dear Weezer, Regarding your comment about Antonios, please do not go by what the newspaper reports. The fact is this; Lodi is known for only reporting what Lodi wants reported. Just like Antonio's was picked out because it did not live up to the standards of "Lodi", Mojos will now be the target unit it too closes. I know of an incident where inocent people driving through Lodi were shot at in their car, (one of four cars shot at) and oddly enough that story still has not been reported, but a bar fight get more attention?? "

" There was a female hit with a glass after she took another girls chair and the police responded because of the assault. The second "fight" was actually a guy who was being ejected by the bouncers for inappropriate dancing. The guy was giving the bouncers a hard time and when the Lodi PD saw him resisting the bouncers they thought it was a fight. The guy arrested for obstructing was actually in the parking lot behind the Merlot and had nothing to do with Mojo's. "

" Allow homeless people to set up CAMP in two large cardboard boxes behind the AMTRACK station next to the cherry warehouse building in the tall grass? Seems like a perfect place to hide from police, drink, drug, hide stolen property? I thought it was a $500.00 fine to trespass on Railroad Property? Guess Lodi doesn't need any money! "

It's ironic that Lodi PD can rarely be found downtown when they are needed, but there's no shortage of officers when it comes to occurences at MoJo's. Sounds to me like they are being targeted because they no longer fit our city leaders' image of "liveable, loveable Lodi." "
