Dealing the dark

New Lodi business offers everything Gothic

It's too late for Valentine's Day, but Mother's Day is around the corner.

How about getting Mom some suckers with a worm in it?

Or some "Death Mints?"

How 'bout some nail polish called "Rigormortis?"

Perhaps a purse, clothes or mouse pad with an "evil fairy" on it?

You can get these and a whole lot more at a downtown Lodi business called Gothic City. It opened a week ago on Pine Street.

Owners Sandy and George Smith anticipate a large following among teens and twentysomethings as they offer gothic and punk clothes, make-up, body jewelry — you name it.

All the accessories for the "Goth" lifestyle are available here in Lodi.

"If you want blue hair, you'll put it in your hair," co-owner Sandy Smith said while describing "Punky Colour."

Although Gothic City isn't for everyone, neighboring businesswoman Lorrie Harper isn't concerned.

"They could have done it in a different way," said Harper, who owns Kingdom of Four Paws. "It could have been scary. The store is done very decently."

Sandy and George Smith, who have lived in Lodi about 25 years, opened Gothic City on March 7 on Pine Street, just a skull's throw west of the Lodi Arch.

Sandy Smith said she first intended to sell fairies, but her goal evolved to a lot more than that. She combed the Internet and found all sorts of gothic and punk items. She ordered them, and now she's selling them in the store.

"All the teenagers are going to be (shopping here)," Sandy Smith said. "There's no competition in Lodi."

Daughter Chrystal added, "All my friends have to go to Stockton."

Chrystal Smith prefers punk to Goth, but she has three or four sisters-in-law, plus their friends, who are heavy into everything Gothic.

"They've been trying to get me to go to Gothic clubs in Modesto and Sacramento," she said.

The Smith family said they have received positive feedback from young people who come in to browse and shop. One man, about 19 years old, told the Smiths he had 14 body piercings. One ear was so heavily pierced he needed stitches to close the wound. He also had several piercings on his chin.

"It looked like nails were coming out of his chin," Chrystal Smith said.

The male customers seem to shop for body jewelry such as ear gauges and eyelets and jewelry for their navel, tongue and nose, Chrystal Smith said. Women want fish-netted shirts, lip rings and "industrial bars" that enter through two parts of their ear.

Boys want to buy knives, although a sign on the glass cabinet strictly says that customers must be at least 18 years old to purchase a knife.

Both genders enjoy the Manic Panic make-up, where they can paint their face white and add dark colored make-up, Sandy Smith said.

"Most of the kids come from pretty wealthy families," said George Smith, who retired from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. three years ago. "Most of the make-up is all upper end."

One day recently, a woman bought some punk make-up for her daughter, George Smith said.

"As long as my daughter keeps her grades up," George Smith recalled the customer saying.

Harper, the Kingdom of Four Paws owner, calls Gothic City an opportunity to add variety to Lodi. "It adds one more boutique for downtown," she said.

" punk, I agree. People who say "high school years are the best years of your life" really have had a miserable life. High School is hard. The best times happen after High School, when you get out and get to explore who you are, be it thru college, work, military, etc. Good luck with your future... the best is yet to come ! ... and I am in my 50's and LOVE goth. " Hot Topic is just like this store. I consider myself to be "preppy" but I shop at Hot Topic sometimes. It is not just for devil worship matieral and gothic clothes. By reading this article I think that this store will be fine! When I went to Tokay, I did see my share of students all blacked out in gothic clothes, and now they dont have to travel far to get it. "

" I'm part of an industrial/gothic/noise band C/A/T right out of Sacramento, and I can tell you already that this is something Lodi has needed for a long time. After traveling to and fro from Sacramento or San Francisco constantly just to get decent clothing and makeup, it'll be nice to have something right around the corner if there's an eyeshadow emergency. " Sandra, I think you should sell Tarot cards. They're not Satanic, only if you believe they are. Borders in Stockton has Tarot Cards, and you don't see the Christians trying to burn down their store or anything. LOL! Besides, a lot of people are skeptical now about what's actually been told in the bible. So, you go girl! "

" Yay! Congratulations - saw your story on Google News - I run a gothic shop called "Uncle Festers" in a small country town in Australia, and while there is a little bit of support from the locals, most of our trade is with those who make a special visit to our shop - some travelling 100's of miles to do so. We also do a lot of internet business - so dont rule that out either. Remember "They laugh because we are different. We laugh because they are all the same." Cheers, Margaret "

" As a 23 year old who grew up in the punk scene, I'm glad to see something like this open in Lodi. I'm not into goth, but this is a great thing for the teens in Lodi and the surrounding area who choose this style. All you people who speak ill on this store can go back to shopping at wal-mart and mind your own. "

WE DO NOT CARRY TARROT CARDS, ANYTHING TO DO WITH SATANIC WORSHIPS, OR FORTUNE TELLING. OUR ADD WAS NOT PRINTED IN THE PAPER CORRECTLY OUR FOCUS IS ON TEENAGE AND YOUNG ADULT CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES. WE EVEN HAD TWO POLICE OFFICERS THAT MADE A STOP BY OUR STORE AND REALY LIKED IT. SO PLEASE DON'T JUDGE BEFORE MAKING A VISIT TO OUR STORE. "

" This business should have been opened before halloween so it would survive a month or two. I really don't believe that a gothic store will have regular patrons except for the 10-12 in town. What a novelty! Good luck or should I say "may the morning star crystals be with you." "
