We can't allow our nation to fail

Updated: Thursday, February 15, 2007 6:46 AM PST

I was deeply saddened to read your editorial on abandoning Iraq and your failure to recognize that we are in a death struggle with radical Islam.

Iraq is the battlefield for this struggle.

If we surrender, we will rue the day. The worldwide terrorists will gain new strength and the slaughter will be horrendous. Those of us who have been there see the threat clearly. This is Vietnam redux.

I was furious to see how the press misreported what we were doing in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The leftists and pacifists in this country betrayed America's best fighting men. Men of honor were abandoned. We could see the truth everyday in combat. The good news and progress was presented to the American public as defeat and hopelessness. That is happening now in Iraq. Our media lies to us.

Political leaders would rather gain/stay in power than defend this country. I will say again, the killing fields of Cambodia will be seen as child's play if we wimp out in Iraq. These guys are fanatics and we are the only ones capable of stopping them. Open your eyes. Look beyond Iraq. This is a worldwide conflict. Iran, Syria, Egypt, etc. can hardly wait to see the "Great Satan" concede defeat.

There was a day when Americans were not quitters. I want to weep. How can we allow this great nation to fail?

" Brian: Wishful thinking will not bring us victory in Iraq or in the War on Terror. Only decent leadership can do that and we will have to wait at least another two years for that (assuming that we don't impeach Bush). "

" The battlefield against radical Islam is the whole globe, Mr. Osgood, especially since Islam is rapidly spreading worldwide. We could wipe Iraq off the face of the earth, and it still won't lessen the threat against us. Again, I say we should focus on alternative energy sources and security at HOME. "

" So Mr. Osgood, it's better to be WRONG than to quit? That's the American way? Now I get why everyone hates us! "

" Sigh. How many times must it be said? A bi-partisan commission found NO EVIDENCE of a link between Iraq and 9/11. NONE. "

" I like Kim's post. She defines this nation's enemies as anyone who disagrees with Bush and then agrees with Jerry "Killer" Osgood's exhortation for America to kill its enemies. Well its nice to see the goons on the far right finally show their true faces. I wonder, will they tattoo the forearms of all those democrats and republican patriots before they send them to the showers? "

" Jerry good letter. The problem is that America is no longer filled with people who love her. America's melting pot of precious metals has turned into a septic tank of selfminded, liberal anti-American socialist leaches who love to see America and morality flushed down the toilet. Proof that the melting pot theory has failed. "

" My sentiments exactly, Jerry. The hatred that these people have for George Bush has clouded their minds. I just hope that when, not if, the next terrorist attack happens on American soil that I'm standing next to George Bush and not Nancy Pelosi. She'll be too busy wagging her finger saying "I told you so" to care about my welfare, or any of her fellow citizens. This country doesn't need external enemies- we have enough right here to tear her down. "

" Let's see, we've been fighting a war in Iraq based on lies and supported by "delusional" assumptions. " Jerry: The terrorist have already gained immeasurable strength from our presence in Iraq. Our troops have fought bravely but they have been handicapped from the get go by the failure of leadership in the Administration. George W. Bush has betrayed this nation. He must be stopped before he does further harm. "
