Keys' Kitchen closes suddenly; cause unknown

Some workers say they're awaiting paychecks from the Lodi business

Keys' Kitchen, a deli and sandwich delivery business in Lodi's industrial area, closed suddenly Monday morning, with employees saying they received no explanation.

A few workers said that some of their previous paychecks had bounced as well.

"Probably every week for past two or three months, at least one of our checks bounced," said Heather Sexton, who worked at the deli while her fiance, Jason Thompson, 21, was a driver for the company.

"I have rent and truck payments, mouths to feed," Thompson said. "As long as I'm no longer an employee, they don't really care."

A woman who answered the phone at Keys' Kitchen on Monday afternoon said she would not comment. It is unclear if Monday's closure is permanent.

A roster of Lodi Chamber of Commerce members lists Michelle Keys as the owner.

Employees said the owners lived in Hawaii.

Signs posted at the business on Monday said that paychecks would come in the mail. Another note read: "Anyone not currently employed with Keys' Kitchen is not authorized in the building, regardless if you possess a key."

Sexton, one of six people who worked at the deli at Guild Avenue and Pine Street, said she had heard on Thursday that Keys' had lost the contract with a sandwich distribution company.

Then on Friday, Sexton said she was told that the deli would be open only one more week. Instead, it closed on Monday because Sexton called in sick and the other five deli employees walked out at about 9:30 a.m. because they didn't get their paychecks, according to Sexton.

"A bunch of B.S. â€" that's what it is," she said.

Thompson, a driver for Keys for about 14 months, said some $400 worth of his paychecks have bounced and he has not received his last two checks. Employees were paid weekly at the business.

"They still haven't answered me that I don't have a job," Thompson said.

"I know I don't, but I would still like to be told."

James Grooms, 37, worked at Keys' Kitchen for the last time on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. He was off Friday, but he said he got a phone call at about 4:45 p.m. He was told to come to the deli and turn in his key.

Grooms arrived an hour later, but no one was there. He was anxious to pick up his final two paychecks.

Keys' Kitchen is normally closed on weekends. Grooms returned there Monday morning to turn in his key and hoping to receive the checks he said he was owed.

Grooms said management took his key, but no check was forthcoming.

" Unpaid employees is never good news but all of you saying that people should sue need to think about how to go about getting water from a rock. Where do you think the payroll funds will come from? Anyone who has ever dealt with the financial side of small business knows almost all small business is operating with their heads barely above water. To say "drive by the owners house and look at the toys"? The owner doesn't even live in the state anymore, any toys you see don't belong to her. "

" We added our comments about this situation being unfortunate. Bad things happen everyday, worse than a job lost, and life does go on. In the whole scheme of things this is something where these people can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and go looking for a new job. They didn't receive a cancer diagnosis, they didn't loose a loved one in a horrible accident. They lost a job. If they were good at that job I'll bet they'll find something new in no time.I'm sure the valuable employees of KEYS are not on a forum whining about a sandwich comment. "

Lodian wrote on Feb 1, 2007 10:33 AM:

" dumbfounded: And you say I (we) were being insensitive? The difference between you and I is that I made a comment about a nice healthy sandwich. Your comments were meant to hurt/attack me for talking sandwiches. See a difference there? If talking about a good sandwich (which was always to be found at KEYS) is so hurtful to you, I think you have bigger issues. "

" It is unfortunate Key's closed, but as a business owner you have to pay your electric bill. And how dare Michelle blame Blue Shield for vacating building in August is not true. we are still here for another 1 year and several folks eat there daily but she wouldn't know because she is too busy voiding her payroll issues. I feel bad the unemployed employees with no job. "

" I was an employee for Keys from 2003-2005. They were having the same problems then. Being in the position I was, I saw where the problems were. I completely agree with the person that made the comments about the toys etc... Payroll checks were bouncing but somehow they each had a brand new luxery car, a new house being built and weeks long vacations. I feel really sorry for the employees that were wronged. I am so greatful that I got out when I did. "

If posters add to the blog by talking sandwiches, big deal! These employees are out of a job, that sucks, but life does go on for the other folks in town and we still need to eat. I'm sure the employees are working hard on looking for a new job right now, not whining about our posts. "

" What the hell is wrong with yall people?, talking about how your going to miss your sandwich, are your cuopons still good and so forth. The employees have most likely lost their jobs and possibly whatever pay theu had coming to them. Rather than discuss nonsense, maybe someone should try to come up with a solution for the employees loss. I always looked at Lodi as a Community that stuck together and helped their fellow residents, kinda like Mayberry. I guess times change, that's too bad. "

And you people are concerned about having to find another sandwich shop. SHAME ON YOU!!!!! For the former employees: Take your claims to the Labor Relation's Board. Find an attorney who will accept all your claims as a class action suit and put a lein on the building. "
