Fitness Pro expands on Kettleman; McKellar's Taekwondo to move into downtown location
Fitness Pro, which has operated in Lodi for 12 years, has shut down its small gym on Church Street to expand its existing gym on Kettleman Lane.
And after the first of the year, McKellar's Taekwondo will move into the old Fitness Pro building on Church Street, between Pine and Oak streets.
Fitness Pro owners Randy and Nicky Morton closed down its gym on Church Street in November and transferred their equipment into the gym at the Beckman Ranch Shopping Center, 1110 W. Kettleman Lane.
"We were maxed out on Church," Randy Morton said, explaining why he left the downtown Lodi building.
The gym on Church Street was used mostly by women and senior citizens, Morton said. Parking has been a problem, and it's going to get worse with the ongoing construction planned for the street, he said.
To compensate for the closure of the Church Street location, Morton has expanded the gym on Kettleman Lane to include a separate room for senior citizens. And by the first of the year gym manager Jeff Anderson said he hopes to have child care.
At the expanded gym, patrons have choice of free weights, workout bicycles and electronic machines, including a cardio treadmill.
Despite the closure of the Church Street gym, the Mortons have two other gyms in the area. They have been in Galt for 14 years and Lockeford for almost three years.
McKellar's Taekwondo, on the other hand, is making the reverse move. Owner Tyrone McKellar is located next door to the Morton's in the Beckman Ranch center, but he hopes to move by January.
While Morton wanted to leave Church Street because it is too small and lacks parking, McKellar looks forward to the increased visibility and central downtown location.
McKellar said he plans to expand his program to offer more boxing and kickboxing. He also wants to offer a program that's more oriented to health and fitness and an atmosphere that's less formal.
Many adults shy away from formal customs like wearing white uniforms and bowing at their opponent, McKellar said.
McKellar has three employees but hopes to add a couple of black belt instructors to the staff. He also has a taekwondo business in Lockeford and is exploring a third studio in Stockton.
