Laura Bush aims to give congressman boost in tight election race

The Republican chairman of the House Resources Committee, who has faced of wave of attack ads from national conservation groups, is an "enthusiastic steward" of the environment and a friend of wildlife, first lady Laura Bush told GOP supporters Friday.

The first lady defended the environmental record of seven-term U.S. Rep. Richard Pombo, seeking to give him a boost in his unexpectedly tight re-election campaign. Environmental groups have spent heavily to defeat the California congressman, angered by what they say are anti-environmental policies he has championed as the committee's chairman.

Appearing with Pombo at a campaign rally, Bush told supporters that the congressman has led efforts to promote alternative fuels and reform the Endangered Species Act. She said the act has created barriers to repairing the aging levees that crisscross Pombo's district, which stretches from the agricultural plains of the Central Valley to eastern San Francisco Bay area suburbs.

"Congressman Pombo is an enthusiastic steward of our country's natural resources," Bush said in Pleasanton, about 40 miles east of San Francisco. "Because of his leadership, wildlife, property and people will be protected from dangerous flooding."

Pombo, a rancher who has held the 11th Congressional District seat since 1992, faces a surprisingly competitive race against Democrat Jerry McNerney, a 53-year-old wind-energy engineer who holds a doctorate in mathematics.

"It's astounding that she would mention the environment and Richard Pombo in the same sentence because Richard Pombo has made his living beating up on environmentalists and environmental laws," said Rob Caughlan, a McNerney campaign spokesman. "That's why we have the support of every environmental group in the country."

The first lady's campaigning for Pombo four days before Tuesday's election underscored Republican worries that Democrats could take control of Congress.

On Thursday night, she campaigned for Rep. John Doolittle, another Republican incumbent at risk of losing his House seat, at a small Christian college in a Sacramento suburb.

Pombo, 45, has been environmentalists' public enemy No. 1 since becoming chairman of the Resources Committee in 2003.

A staunch advocate for private property rights, he pushed an overhaul of the Endangered Species Act through the House last year that gave new rights to landowners and limited habitat protections.

He also supported legislation that would have allowed the sale of public lands for mining and advocated for more domestic oil drilling, both offshore and in Alaska. Meanwhile Pombo has taken campaign money from oil, gas and timber companies that would benefit from his legislation.

Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Defenders of Wildlife have spent more than $1 million on campaign ads to unseat Pombo since California's June primary.

"Richard Pombo is the worst environmental actor in the United States Congress," said Mark Longabaugh, political director for Defenders of Wildlife. "The litany of legislative attacks Pombo has made on environmental protection is almost too long to list."

Pombo, who introduced the first lady at Friday's rally, dismissed criticism of his environmental record.

"Anybody saying that you're anti-environment is just being stupid," Pombo told reporters after the rally. "I mean, nobody is against the environment. We may disagree on the best way to do things, but that doesn't make you anti-environment."

In her address, the first lady told GOP volunteers that Pombo has championed legislation that helped create jobs, cut taxes, build roads, fight terrorism, promote democracy abroad and bolster the military.

But most surprising were her remarks about Pombo's environmental credentials given the criticism leveled at him by activists. She cited his role in passing the federal Energy Policy Act, which she said would help end the country's dependence on foreign oil by promoting alternative fuels such as biodiesel.

"Congressman Pombo is committed to safeguarding local ecosystems," she told Republican activists at a television-production studio owned by NFL commentator and former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden.

"Richard promotes responsible conservation initiatives, programs that protect wildlife while also improving the lives of his constituents."

Environmentalists planned their own rally in Pleasanton today, when Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were expected to campaign for McNerney.

" The Bush whitewash of Pombo is almost persuasive but its like painting a skunk. Still stinks. John Quincy Adams said: Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost (...no matter what happens with the dibold machines). Pombo and the RNC's recent mailings demostrate that they're are no limits, no moral restraint on what they will say to keep this seat. That has been consistent with Pombo and why as a Republican I won't vote for him. "

" You people seem to forget that Pombo`s district was gerrymandered by the Democratically controlled Cal Legislature to intentionally try to oust him. His conressional disrict now has a large part of the SF Bay area in it. Make no mistake, The Dems want Lodi to become just like SF...... "

" I agree with Truthseeker, well said, Don. But I gotta wonder...what drugs Laura Bush and AP writer are on; especially when the writer says, "Pombo...faces a surprisingly competitive race..." The Neo-Cons are in the process of being trounced - the only reason for this neck-in-neck BS - aside from these guys being on drugs - is the media is setting the public up for another Diebold (s)election. "

" I think I just lost whatever respect I had for Laura Bush. Sure, she has defended her husband in the past but she had to, she's married to him. Now, however, she is out whoring for Dirty Dick Pombo, one of the thirteen most corrupt politicians in Washington and a enemey to this nations men and women in uniform? Apparently there is no depth beneath which some people will not sink. "

" Don, extremely well-said. It's obvious Pombo is in deep trouble. In 2004 he (and his big guns)didn't have to lift a finger. McNerney got 39% of the vote, spending about 1/10th as much. Jerry has a much better shot now, but it hinges on -- you guessed it -- getting out the vote. It's a statistical dead-heat now. Pombo is bad news for our children and grandchildren. "

" Silly slogan aside (Pombo's environmentalism), it's amazing that we've seen Pres. Bush, Cheney and now Laura Bush all making their way through the district, with the sole intent of "energizing the base". Well, if Pombo can't energize his base enough, then that should say it all. Bottom line, you want two more years of rubber-stamp, no oversight, no accountabiity Congress, two more years of "leadership" from Hatert, Boehner, Blunt, Doolittle, Pombo, empty suits with bulging cash filled pockets from K Street Lobbyists, then by all means vote for Pombo and the status quo. You don't change congress without changing congressmen. "
