Do not vote for Pombo

Wednesday, October 25, 2006 6:43 AM PDT

You have done a great disservice to your readers and the 11th District by your endorsement of Richard Pombo for Congress.

Mr. Pombo is an enemy of the environment, a proponent of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve and worst yet, has had long obsession with undoing the Endangered Species Act.

You state that his ethics are in question, yet suggest we re-elect him and maybe he'll go straight. What utter nonsense! He's gotten away with catering to agribusiness, the oil and gas industries, builders, utilities and mining. And let's just ignore his association with Jack Abramoff, why should he become ethical now if we just keep re-electing him?

The man is a disgrace. Do not vote for Pombo.

" Take a good look at Pombo the crook, he's gone in November. DICK Pombo is all hat and no cattle lemmings. "

" Check out the congressional record...it's all there. Pombo voted against a pay raise for our troops but voted to raise his own pay. See 2004 CQ Vote 478, and 2003 Vote 463. Pombo voted against bonuses for soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afganistan. See 2003 CQ Vote 17. Yet at the same time pays his wife and brother more than $350,000.00 for menial takss like bookeeping on his campaing right out of the fat cat contributions he takes according to the Rolling Stone citing Pombo's own disclosures. "

" Of course what is even more depraved than Pombo selling out to oil (see MSN Money, Jim Jubek's current column) is when Pombo voted against paying for better prosthetic devices for soldiers who lost limbs in Iraq and voted to cut $1.8 BIllion from veteran's health care programs. See 2003 CQ Vote 456. That's right, our soldiers who are left without limbs from fighting in Afganistan and Iraq can thank Pombo for insuring that they don't get the prosthetic devices they deserve. "

" Pombo is the enemy of democracy and america. It's that plain. This guy is using his elected position to wholesale our future by proposing to sell off public lands for 1000.00 and acre to corporations, or to lower the service fee on oil developers to use public lands after he took big contributions from them, or too sell out amercian manuafactuers by flip flopping on trade agreements. Pombo also took fees from major financiers for indian gaming bus. right before holding congressional hearings on those issues. "

" It's foolish to think that big oil is not going to jack up prices again with whoever is in congress. Pombo took (according to MSN Money), over $120,000 this year from big oil to his Rich.Pac capaign group. Pombo is under investigation for corruption. 2 of his buddies are already doing time for similar antics that Pombo did. These crimes used to be very rare to see. Now people are actually jaded on hearing them. It's sad to see people who have thrown away the hope of democracy. Demand integrity, vote Pombo out. "

" I partially agree with Robert, that the USA should reduce its dependency upon foreign oil, but I am trying to share and teach that the issue of America retaining its sovereignty is of far greater importance than its prices for oil. Pombo is selling-out America, in compliance with demands from his party in the presidency. What good would it be to obtain control over our own oil prices, if there is no American constitution? "

" You cannot get rid of the "crooks" in congress because the halls would be enpty. A politician who is not crooked just hasn't got elected yet. Once elected they all ultimately achieve a level of crookedness. I want the esa cleaned up, I dont want $5 a gallon gasoline, and other issues pombo supports. I don't need a bay area liberal. "

" Pombo is not an enemy of the enviroment, just idiotic laws that close an entire forest over some "endangered" microbe. His work on the ESA has been with Senator Fienstien to come up with a common sense approach and to get away from bad science. "

" Bob: You are saying that we should vote for Pombo BECAUSE he is unethical???? What a revealing indicator of what Republicans are looking for in a candidate! Using that criteria to determine candidates, I suppose you would vote for Foley as well, if you lived in Florida. "

" It's a sad day when people blog that Pombo "is the best option" considering what he has done. Why not let someone else represent the 11th district who doesn't have the cloud hanging over them? This isn't about Republican vs. Democrat. This is about right and wrong. Pombo has proven to be on the wrong side when it comes to ethics. Is that what you want our children to look up to? "

Ajax wrote on Oct 25, 2006 9:46 AM:

" Nice letter, Pombo is a crook who undermines democracy and our goverment. there are scores of reasons to not vote Pombo. As a Republican sick of these corrupt politicians like Pombo, it is essential for us to restore integrity to our government in DC and that requires us to do the hard thing and vote against those who have demonstrated not only corruption like Ney, Cunningham and Pombo, but also an indifference to the needs of our nation. Pombo has to go, the honerable Pete McClosky is right. "
