Second tragic accident for Lodi family in less than eight months

Anthony Garecht, whose sister, Kelly, died in an accident Christmas Eve, is in critical condition in Washington state

Less than one year after his sister's death in a car accident, Anthony Garecht, 21, a U.S. Navy officer and Lodi native is in critical condition at Washington State hospital after single-car accident late Monday.

In December 2005 Garecht's sister, Kelly, and her best friend, Jackie Terry, both 17, died after being struck by a vehicle on the shoulder of Highway 88 on Christmas Eve.

Monday night officers responded to reports of a car accident near Lake Tahuyeh just after 10 p.m.

Garecht, who was on active duty in Bremerton, Wash., was driving a 2003 Lexus IS300 near Lake Tahuyeh with his girlfriend, when he missed a sharp curve to the left and struck a tree.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wilson said the road has several sharp curves and has a posted speed of 25 mph, although the recommended speed is 20 mph.

Wilson said excessive speed appeared to be the cause of the accident, but officers are still investigating. He said alcohol and drugs were ruled out as factors.

Although Wilson said he could not release the names of either passenger, the hospital confirmed Garecht remained in critical condition Tuesday evening.

Wilson said the girlfriend died upon arrival at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and the driver's injuries are "considered to be life threatening."

A close friend of the Garecht family said Anthony Garecht was determined to be brain dead and the hospital is awaiting approval to discontinue life support.

" Im so sorry for your loss.I didnt know anthony long but he was at my house everyday the last few weeks of his life. My best friend was Hope Graham and we all hung out on their last day. We went out to dinner and had such a good time.Anthony had just dropped me off at my house and went to take hope home.I hope Anthonys family is well, he was such a terrific guy and left a special place in my heart.
